VIKING VOICES

Fall open house will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 18 at Allentown Central Catholic High School. Current and prospective families will be able to tour the school, meet teachers and students and learn about Central’s clubs and activities. Viking Christmas, which features Central spirit wear and other ACCHS gifts for sale will also be held 2 to 4 p.m. in Rockne Hall.

An ACCHS Ladies Night will be held at The Shelby 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 8. The restaurant is located on Krocks Road in Allentown. All current and alumni ladies are welcome to come and enjoy hors d’oeuvres, friendship and fun. The event will benefit the Viking Fest Wine Pull. Donations of wine bottles valued at $20 or more are greatly appreciated.

The Best Friends Forever Club, which pairs ACCHS students with a buddy at Mercy School for Special Learning, has begun its meetings. The club plans many fun activities throughout the year, including holiday parties and bowling nights.

The 2021 student council will hold a Glow in the Dark Bowling Tournament in Masson Auditorium Nov. 9. Doors open 6:30 p.m. and bowling begins 7 p.m. Teams can consist of no more than four players and bright colors or costumes are encouraged. There is a cost. Registration is due by Nov. 7.

The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival’s WillPower Tour, a traveling theatre troupe that performs Shakespeare’s plays, stopped at ACCHS Oct. 16 to perform “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Students watched the show in Rockne Hall and had the opportunity to ask the cast questions after the show ended.

The Viking Marching Band competed at Whitehall High School Oct. 20. The band performed the show “Michael Jackson: King of Pop,” for which they received sixth place in their category.

The ecology club, in collaboration with the Friends of Allentown Parks and the City of Allentown, worked Oct. 20 to remove brush from trees planted at Cedar Crest Parkway. The students cleaned out the brush and examined the trees’ health.

The Viking and Vikette cross country teams competed in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, Inc. District XI 2A Championships Oct. 24 in Bethlehem. Both teams finished in fourth place. Viking medalists included Nathan Harris (sixth place) and Brendan Christ (10th place). Vikette Isabel DeVos finished in fourth place. These three medalists will compete in the state championships in Hershey Nov. 3. The teams also competed at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference cross country championships in Bethlehem Oct. 16, where Isabel DeVos placed 11th. Both the Vikings and Vikettes finished ninth.

Senior Week was held Oct. 22 to 26. The week was full of fun activities for the seniors, including a class Mass, a morning tailgate, college shirt day, movie night, color day, a scavenger hunt, decades day, senior Olympics and costume day. The week-long celebration culminated Oct. 26 at the Holy War, the annual football game against Bethlehem Catholic High School.

Central Catholic hosted Bethlehem Catholic fall sports captains for Mass and brunch Oct. 25. Captains from both schools represented soccer, cross country, golf, tennis, volleyball, field hockey, football, marching band and cheerleading. The event encouraged fellowship and community between the schools before the Holy War football game Oct. 26.

The Class of 2019 hosted a “Trunk or Treat” in the school parking lot Oct. 26. During the event, students from Sacred Heart Elementary School trick-or-treated around the lot. Senior students dressed up in costumes and handed out candy from the decorated trunks of their cars.

The All Saints and All Souls Retreat was held 3:15 to 7:15 p.m. Oct. 30. Students traveled to Bally to visit a 200-year-old cemetery and attend Mass at the Most Blessed Sacrament of Bally Church, which is the oldest Catholic church in the Allentown Diocese.

Several Vikettes made the EPC girls volleyball All-Stars list. Rachel Hess, who is committed to La Salle University to further her volleyball and academic career, was named to the first team. Grace Barr was named to the second team and Sydney Giamalis was named to the third team. Vikette Volleyball defeated Bethlehem Catholic 3-0 in a the District XI Quarterfinals Oct. 24. The girls advanced to the semifinals, where they played Southern Lehigh.
