It has been a successful fall for Allentown Central Catholic High School sports teams.

Vikette tennis held their senior night Sept. 28 and recognized Jess Davis, Katie Gehris, Lauren Minutella, Hannah Sarmir and Katelyn Wang. Doubles partners Jess Davis and Emma Sweterlish were named Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Doubles Champions Oct. 10 during the EPC Championships. Kara Wang and Sabrina Yurconic took third in doubles.

Central Catholic golfers Ian Arnold, Charlie Long, Nathan Myers and Emilie Wright competed in the District XI Golf Championships at Lehigh Country Club Oct. 8. Arnold, a senior, ended in fifth place with a score of 77 and will advance to regionals.

The cross country team celebrated its senior night Oct. 9 after a meet at the Lehigh Parkway. The senior Vikettes are Sarah Demchak, Sydni Ernst, Nicole Freeman, Sydney Harris, Kellee Heydorn, Helen Jiang, Abby Lienhard and Amanda Svetz. Senior Vikings included Brendan Christ, Michael Fleck, Michael Galassi, Noah Reimert, Stephen Sweetana and Luke Talago. The Vikettes are defending district champions; the Vikings took second place at last year’s district championship. The team will compete in the District XI Championships on Oct. 24 in Bethlehem.

The Viking soccer team celebrated its senior night Oct. 3 after a game against Nazareth, who they defeated 2-0. Seniors include Finn McMullen, Matt Miller, Claudson Oliveira, Matt Scandone, Sam Vaughan and Miles Wagner. The team defeated Emmaus 1-0 on Oct. 11, qualifying for districts.

Central students have also been active in service and fundraising events.

On Oct. 7, the Viking football team participated in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Community Walk at the Lehigh Parkway. The walk benefited the AFSP’s research, education, advocacy and support efforts.

Vikette volleyball held a “Spike Out Cancer Night” Oct. 4 during their game against Parkland in Rockne Hall. A raffle was held to benefit a former Emmaus volleyball player and current league coach who was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Viking Mentors have been traveling to CCHS’ feeder schools over the past weeks for the Vikings on the Road program, during which Central students share their experiences and answer questions from middle school students. They have visited St. Ann’s, St. Elizabeth’s, St. Michael the Archangel, St. Joseph the Worker and St. Thomas More.

CCHS students are also visiting walk-a-thon’s at feeder schools. Cheerleaders, football players, the drumline and Viking and Vikette Dylan Brown and Colby Davis stopped by St. Michael the Archangel’s walk-a-thon Oct. 5. The Central students cheered on the walkers and performed for them as they completed the course. They also visited St. Joseph the Worker and St. John Vianney Oct. 12.

The pro-life club is sponsoring a diaper drive. Students have the chance to bring in a baby item to earn a spirit dress down day in November.

The Viking marching band competed in the Easton Area High School Instrumental Music Association’s 44th First Flag Over the United Colonies Band Festival Oct. 3. The band performed their show, “Michael Jackson: King of Pop” and earned an overall score of “Excellent.” The marching band also competed Oct. 20 at Whitehall High School.

Central’s 2019 spring musical will be “The Drowsy Chaperone” and will be held April 4-6. The show is billed as a “1920s musical within a comedy.” Auditions will be held Nov. 4.

Seniors Michael Fleck and Ryan Schanta earned letters of commendation from the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended students place within the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who were eligible by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
