LEHIGH COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY

The Lehigh County Humane Society has had its share of new residents recently.

Around 11:30 p.m. Oct. 6, Lehigh County Humane Society Shelter Manager Teisha Jones received a call for a rescue of 25 beagles from a home in Upper Saucon. As it turns out, there were 65 beagles and the homeowner Robert Tettemer, of Coopersburg, relinquished the animals to the humane society and according to court documents, allegedly has been cited for operating an illegal kennel, failure to produce registration for each dog and failure to have proof of rabies vaccines.

On Oct. 18 and 19, the Lehigh County Humane Society received adoption applications for all 65 of the beagles.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. Oct. 15, the Macungie Police Department received a call for unattended dogs at a rental property in the 900 block of Hillcrest Drive. Upon arrival and after assessing the situation with the homeowner who rented the home to a family member and her boyfriend, police contacted the Lehigh County Humane Society to remove approximately 100 animals including rabbits, rats, several dozen snakes, three husky dogs, two potbellied pigs and several dozen exotic birds. The owner did not relinquish ownership of the pets to the humane society; therefore the animals are not available for adoption at this time. The snakes, pigs and birds are being cared for by various rescue organizations.

According to news reports, officials raided a home in Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County, Oct. 18, rented by the same person in the Macungie home, and found over 240 animals including snakes, skunks, alligators and tortoises. They were removed by the Montgomery County SPCA.

The Lehigh County Humane Society wants to give a special thanks to the community for the support of the beagles and to those who have completed adoption applications.

The humane society is still in need of monetary donations to help support the animals in the various rescue organizations and those animals at the facility in need of homes.
