egardless of what happens on Friday night in the Falcons’ season finale against Southern Lehigh, a berth in the competitive Class 3A playoffs has been out of reach for weeks.

Still, head coach Andy Cerco’s team won’t roll over and quit despite all of the adversity that has surrounded the group this fall. Plenty of key injuries still figure to haunt the Falcons, but the players that suit up for Friday’s 7 p.m. kickoff will seek to end the season on a positive note.

“We’re a much better team than our record reflects,” Cerco said. “We haven’t played one game all year with all of our starters. Not one game.”

The Falcons will host a Southern Lehigh team that has put together an impressive second half the season.

The Spartans (6-3) have won their past five games, including a Week 7 victory over West Division leader Northwestern, 45-21.

Southern Lehigh has outscored its past two opponents 117-14, including last week’s 63-7 rout of Catasauqua. The offense has been exceptional since the winning streak began in mid-September, posting five straight games with at least 40 points scored.

“Their offense is centered around their quarterback, which in today’s game that makes a lot of sense,” Cerco said. “You do what your quarterback is good at, and they’ve designed quarterback runs for him.”

Senior quarterback Logan Edmond returns under center for the Spartans and has been one of the top Colonial League quarterbacks all season. He’s completed 91 of 151 passes for 1,442 yards this season with 20 touchdowns opposed to just two interceptions. Edmond is a dynamic threat in the running game as well. He leads the team in both rushing attempts (125) and rushing yards (712) to go along with his four scores on the ground. He ran for 140 yards on just eight attempts in last week’s win over the Rough Riders.

But the Spartans aren’t a one-man show on the gridiron. Dalton Musselman has tallied a team-high 33 catches for 617 yards and 12 of Edmonds’ touchdowns. Wide receiver Trey Trevis has hauled in 27 catches and five touchdowns for 481 yards.

Out of the backfield, Musselman is a nice one-two punch to compliment Edmond. He’s scored six times on the ground and has run for 283 yards on 31 attempts. Alex Knecht has added 201 yards and four touchdowns for the Spartans.

“They like to get the ball vertically,” Cerco said. “They always have a check down, and they are pretty good with getting their guys in space and using the whole field.

“It’s definitely going to be a challenge defensively to make sure we get things accounted for in both the run game and passing game. They are pretty well balanced.”
