Plaque re-dedication Oct. 19 in Allentown

Lehigh County is having a rededication noon Oct. 19 of the plaque presented to the county in 1962 at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Lehigh County Plaza, Seventh and Hamilton streets.

Originally placed on the Allentown National Bank building, the plaque was thought lost in 2012 due to the construction of Two City Center.

After it was located in the Allentown City Hall basement, it was reinstalled at the county Government Center.

The Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council, in 2017, began a $14,000 campaign to restore the plaque and mount it on the base of the monument with a new pedestal installation.

The project was completed recently as part of an effort to raise awareness of veterans’ contributions to society.

Special guests and sponsors will be the Honorary First Defenders, Allentown Chapter; Thomas S. Muller, former Lehigh County executive; Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council; and private sponsors Christine A. Castiello; Chaplain Candidate Program Officer Thomas M. Henehan, USN; Master Sgt. Roslyn G. and Master Gunnery Sgt. Carl J. Schroeder Jr., USMC; Maj. Gen. Gerald C. Still, U.S. Air Force retired and Erika Still; and Joseph R. Zeller and Ann A. Wertman.
