Lots of fun for teens happened Sept. 15 during Teen’s Cupcake Wars at the Parkland Community Library, South Whitehall.

Three cupcakes, already baked, were given to the seven contestants to decorate.

One was to be decorated with the contestant’s favorite book theme.

The second was to be decorated with a creative theme and the final cupcake was to be decorated just to enjoy eating.

White icing could be tinted with a favorite color, and a wide choice of candies, as well as fruit, raisins, chocolate, miniature marshmallows, pretzels and nuts were available to the contestants who set out to create a winner.

Amanda Evans, youth services coordinator, instructed the contestants about the rules, in particular they had to wear plastic gloves and then she announced one surprise ingredient they had to use, similar the cake wars on TV.

The surprise ingredient was bacon.

She opened a bag of cooked bacon, which they could use any way they wanted, including chopped in either the book themed cupcake or the creative cupcake.

Mothers stood by and watched.

After about 45 minutes, two judges from the library staff, Becky Wanamaker, adult services and programing librarian, and Diane Stull, from the circulation desk, looked over the entries, scored and tasted them.

Creativity, taste and presentation were judged.

After deliberating and grading the cupcakes, Wanamaker and Stull awarded the prizes.

First prize went to Miriya Fratrik.

Her book theme was “Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone” and so was her creative cupcake.

Second prize went to Jocelyn Paisi, whose favorite book was “Blue Moon.”

She used a blue icing for her cupcake and for her creative cupcake she used chocolate chips, mini marshmallows and bacon.

And, third prize went to Zara Riaz, whose favorite book was “Wonder.”

Her creative cupcake had a Halloween theme and a spider web on it.

All the contestants received a pass to play miniature golf at Putt-U in Center Valley.
