The Colonial League held its annual tennis tournament last week. Despite the Falcons’ youth, a number of Salisbury players had impressive outings last Thursday at Saucon Valley High School.

Leading the way was sophomore Paige Gibbons at the No. 2 singles’ spot. Gibbons won her first eight-game pro set over Bangor’s Gioia Beltrano, 8-5. The Falcon sophomore then dropped her next match against Moravian Academy top-seeded Miranda Gibson, 8-0, and then against Southern Lehigh’s Kayla Lebby, 8-0.

“We faced tough competition,” Salisbury head coach Rob Benson said. “It’s one of those years, but we still have the doubles coming up and we made the team playoffs. It looks like we’ll play Moravian [in the first round of team districts].”

Kubinsky, Salisbury’s No. 1 singles player, faced tough competition from the start. As the No. 5 seed in the bracket, Kubinsky fell to Moravian’s Isabella Bartolacci in the first round, 8-3.

No. 3 singles player, freshman Mackenzie Hankee, faced strong competition and came up short against Bangor’s GG Murgia, 8-4, in the opening round.

“I’m impressed with all of them,” Benson said. “They’ve improved so much since the beginning of the year. They are all doing well. It’s just a tough league.”

The doubles teams also had a tough draw last week against a couple of top duos tandems in the Colonial League.

At No. 1 doubles, senior Katie Denver and freshman Krista Bonge fell to Notre Dame’s Sara Medei and Juliane Rosko. No. 2 doubles tandem of junior Bethany Hnatow and senior Caitlin Scialla, the No. 5 seed, hung around with Saucon Valley’s Serenna Elbanna and Abby Altemose before falling, 8-6.

While no Salisbury player was crowned a champion last week, there is still plenty of tennis left this fall. Up next is the district team championship in which Salisbury will be the No. 7 seed and is projected to face the Colonial League’s top team in Moravian Academy. That tournament opens with quarterfinals on Monday.

“That was the goal-to make the team playoffs,” Benson said. “And we did that. My top four players are two sophomores and two freshmen. So, they have to learn, but they will.”

Moravian won the Colonial League championship by taking first place in three of the five flights.

Salisbury’s singles players all competed in Monday’s District 11 individual tournament. All three were eliminated in their first-round match.
