The main focus of Salisbury’s football practice last week was Catasauqua’s run game and the triple option scheme the Rough Riders run.

It turns out, however, the highlight of Saturday’s game was Salisbury’s rushing attack.

Senior quarterback Jacob Kamp ran for over 100 yards, and Salisbury totaled 273 on the ground in a 35-7 win over Catasauqua on Saturday afternoon. The win improved the Falcons to 2-4 and snapped a two-game losing streak.

“It was a huge accomplishment for our team,” Kamp said. “It was all because of our line today. The line played fantastic. We had a ton of rushing touchdowns.”

“The best part is how proud I am of the kids,” Cerco said. “They were able to mature and grow as a team this week. We put a lot of time and effort in the classroom talking about their perspective on things and how to hold their composure when things don’t exactly go well. They are maturing as athletes and that’s important.”

Kamp and the Falcons wasted no time in getting the scoring started. He capped Salisbury’s opening drive of the game with a 2-yard quarterback sneak, giving the Falcons a 7-0 lead with 4:09 to play in the opening quarter.

After a second straight Catasauqua (1-5) three and out, Kamp led the Falcons on another lengthy drive. He capped an 11-play drive with a 10-yard scamper into the end zone for a 14-0 lead.

The lead grew to three touchdowns minutes later when Kamp ran in from 14 yards out on a crucial fourth-and-1 play in Catasauqua territory.

“Cerco and I have built a strong bond over the past four years that I’ve played football here at Salisbury,” Kamp said. “We work together one-on-one going over our entire play scheme every day.”

Salisbury added two more touchdowns in the third quarter before the Rough Riders got on the board in the final six minutes of play. Arguably his most impressive run of the game, Kamp broke two tackles and took his first carry of the second half 53 yards to pay dirt for a 28-0 Falcon advantage.

Fullback Kyle Killiri then went up the middle untouched for 39 yards and a touchdown just about three minutes later. That score put in effect the mercy rule with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

“When our players are able to execute their blocks properly, and we get on their hip, we have some really good athletes who can do things with the football,” Cerco said. “I think you saw that today. Our offensive line did a fantastic job.”

“We planned tremendously like we do every week,” Kamp said. “I can’t say anything more about our linemen-[senior] Dan Jennings, [senior] Lucas Reichard, [sophomore] Matt Butz, [junior] Koby Rollins and [senior] Josh Kerczeg. They did a phenomenal job today.”

What was most impressive for Cerco is the fact that his first-team defense held Catasauqua scoreless for over 42 minutes. The Falcons also forced the Rough Riders into four straight three-and-outs to open the game, two turnovers on downs and a lost fumble through three quarters.

“That was actually the most impressive part of the game because their offense is something that if you are not a disciplined team, it can become very complicated to defend,” Cerco said. “That’s a great offensive scheme. They do a great job with it.”

Timmy Buda ran for 41 yards and Killiri added 40 more on the ground.

Wilquon Clemons led Catasauqua with 55 rushing yards.
