Allentown Central Catholic High School celebrated its 2018 Homecoming during the week of Sept. 24-29.

Spirit Week was held Sept. 17-21 and featured themes such as Pajama Day, Jersey Day, Groutfit Day, Twin Day and Green and Gold Day. The week culminated in a pep rally Sept. 28, which featured performances from the varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders, the drumline, the dance team, and the mance team, a long-standing tradition in which senior boys perform a choreographed dance during the pep rally.

The homecoming dance was held Sept. 21 in Rockne Hall. Homecoming King and Queen Michael Fleck and Rhyan Joyce were crowned at the dance.

The homecoming football game was held Sept. 22 at J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown. The Vikings defeated East Stroudsburg North 38-13 and were cheered on by current students and alumni. A food truck tailgate was held before the game and featured Cactus Blue, Bob-B-Q and Oogie’s Ice Cream.

The Viking football team had many achievements during the homecoming game. Senior Logan Bachman had 2,000 rushing yards, senior Frank Rauscher had 2,000 passing yards and senior Rustin Seyle broke a school record with a 46-yard field goal.

Vikette volleyball player and senior Rachel Hess scored her 1,000th kill Sept. 24 during a game in Rockne Hall. Sophomore Monic Vargo was named MaxPreps/American Volleyball Coaches Association Pennsylvania Volleyball Player of the Week. Vargo had 182 assists, 19 blocks, seven digs and three aces.

The Vikette volleyball team will host three Catholic Youth Organization nights – Oct. 4 (vs. Parkland), Oct. 8 (vs. Nazareth) and Oct. 15 (vs. Emmaus). Junior varsity begins 5 p.m. followed by varsity. There will be food, games and shirts for sale. The Vikettes will also celebrate senior night Oct. 15.

Senior Ian Arnold won the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference boys golf championship with a 5-over-par 77 Sept. 26 at Woodstone Country Club. Arnold’s win marked the second consecutive year a Central golfer took home the championship. Graduate Matt Kalamar won last season with a 76. Central students Emilie Wright and Charlie Long placed third with a 90 and ninth with an 82, respectively.

The Vikette basketball team will hold free basketball clinics for girls in fifth through eighth grades 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18 and 30 in Rockne Hall. The Central Catholic cheerleaders appeared on B104 on the morning of Sept. 14. The girls discussed their upcoming season and performed for the studio.

The 2018-19 Central Committee presented the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley with a $1,200 check. The money was raised by a school-wide spirit dress down day.

The Ecology Club was hard at work Sept. 22 in downtown Allentown. The club planted mums and cleaned the Fifth Street Playground along with the Friends of Allentown Parks. The club also presented Friends of the Allentown Parks Director Karen El-Charr with a $100 check for her organization.

Central students traveled to Philadelphia for a Catholic Heritage Pilgrimage Oct. 1. They visited the first Catholic Churches in the City (Old St. Joe’s and St. Mary’s), Independence Hall, the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and Reading Terminal Market.
