Girls tennis runs into CL’s top teams
Despite being young and a bit inexperienced, the Salisbury girls tennis team has been impressive this fall season.
It’s been a streaky season for the Falcons, but Salisbury is currently sitting fourth in the Colonial League standings at 7-4. The Falcons sit behind Moravian Academy (10-0), Southern Lehigh (10-1) and Notre Dame of Green Pond (6-2).
“We’ve got a young team,” Falcon head coach Rob Benson said. “They are doing very well. I’m proud of the girls. We’re right in the middle with Saucon Valley and Bangor. We beat Saucon twice already. Of the second-tier of teams, we’re probably near the top.”
After opening the season with a loss to Moravian Academy, Salisbury reeled off seven straight wins in conference play. The Falcons defeated Palisades, Pen Argyl twice, Wilson twice and Saucon Valley twice during its winning streak.
However, as of late, it’s been tough going against those top teams. The Falcons fell to Southern Lehigh twice, Notre Dame (Green Pond) and nonconference foe Central Catholic over the past two weeks.
“We should come out all right,” Benson said. “We have a makeup match with Bangor on Wednesday, and we are going to do two matches in one day. We’re going to finish the one match, and we are currently ahead in first and second singles and first doubles. They all won the first set.”
The two victories against Saucon Valley, both 3-2, were pleasant surprises for Benson. His No. 1 doubles team of Katie Denver and Krista Bonge helped secure the second victory against the Panthers on Sept. 4. The two rallied for a 7-5 third set tiebreaker victory after falling in the first set.
“The two Saucon Valley matches were big,” Benson said. “We won those both 3-2. The last one came down to our first doubles team. They were down, got back to a tiebreaker, and won it 7-5 in a third set tiebreaker.”
The play of Bryn Kubinsky and Paige Gibbons has been impressive as well at No. 1 and No. 2 singles after the two played doubles last season for Benson.
“I was concerned about Bryn and Paige playing No. 1 and No. 2 singles because they only played doubles last year,” Benson said. “But they’ve done fine.”
With five matches remaining, Benson and the Falcons’ goal of reaching the district team duals is within reach. If they take care of business, the Falcons figure to be playing into the postseason as a team once again.
“I was hoping to reach .500,” Benson said. “We’re going to make the playoffs, and that was kind of what I was looking for. All of them are playing a little bit better than you could have expected.”
Results from Tuesday’s match again Notre Dame (Green Pond) were not available at time of press. The first match again Bangor will start at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
