Whitehall athletic director Bob Hartman announced the inaugural class for the District 11 Hall of Fame recently.

The inaugural class includes 14 inductees selected from nominations made by member schools, officials’ chapters, and media membership.

All inductees were selected based on their high school accomplishments solely.

This year’s class will be celebrated on Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center Lehigh Valley in Upper Macungie Township at 4 p.m.

Tickets for the event are $50 and can be purchased by contacting District 11 chairman Bob Hartman at hartmanb@whitehallcoplay.org.

Deadline for tickets is October 1.

Below is a recap of the inaugural class of inductees, which includes Emmaus field hockey coach Sue Butz-Stavin; Allentown High football and basketball coach J. Birney Crum; Marian Catholic basketball standout Diane Decker; Allen High basketball coach John Donmoyer; Northampton football coach Al Erdosy; Catasauqua’s four-time state champion wrestler, Matt Gerhard; Central Catholic girls basketball star Michelle Marciniak; CCHS football and basketball standout Ed McCaffrey; Catasauqua basketball great Larry Miller; Palmerton basketball star Bob Mlkvy; Nazareth wrestling coach Ray Nunamaker; Stroudsburg football star Artie Owens; Allentown High’s state championship winning basketball coach Milo Sewards and Panther Valley swimming star Allyssa Vavra.

Sue Butz-Stavin made her mark as the field hockey coach at Emmaus High School. While leading the Green Hornets, she has coached 29 straight District 11 title teams and won 33 district championships overall along with 12 state titles. Her teams have won more than 900 games.

J. Birney Crum led Allentown High from 1925 through 1950, amassing 190 wins in football and 490 wins in basketball. From 1945-47, his Canaries won basketball state championships. Crum, who died in 1981, was inducted in to the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.

Diane Decker was an outstanding basketball player from 1981-85. While playing for the Fillies, Decker amassed 2,377 points and 1,116 rebounds and led Marian to a PIAA crown in 1984. She was named Converse All-American and USA Today Honorable Mention All-American.

John Donmoyer finished his career as the most successful boys basketball coach in District 11 history, totaling 624 wins during stops at Allen (23 years) and Moravian Academy (17 years). Donmoyer, who died in 2014, is a member of the Lehigh Valley Basketball Hall of Fame.

Al Erdosy was the football coach of the Konkrete Kids from 1939-68. He posted a remarkable record of 169-25-9. His teams won 21 Lehigh Valley League championships. Erdosy may be best known for his use of the short punt offense. In 1969, the football stadium at Northampton was named in his honor.

Matt Gerhard won his four straight PIAA wrestling titles from 1981-84. He finished his career with a record of 127-3. Gerhard also won four straight District 11 and regional titles.

Michelle Marciniak was named National Player of the Year by Parade Magazine and Gatorade and was the Naismith National Player of the Year in 1991. She scored 3,025 points in her high school career that ended in 1991.

Ed McCaffrey contributed to Central Catholic’s 1984 and ’86 state championship teams. He scored 1,637 points, was AP All-State in 1985-86. He was also a Parade All-American and AP first team all-state choice in football in 1985.

Larry Miller had an iconic basketball career at Catasauqua from 1860-64, ending his career as District 11’s all-time leading scorer with 2,722 points. He also secured 2,062 career rebounds and led the Rough Riders to four straight Lehigh Valley League titles and three straight District 11 championships.

Bob Mlkvy scored 1,925 points in basketball from 1954-57. He led the Blue Bombers to three straight league championships. The 1956 team, led by Mlkvy, played for a state championship against Farrell. Mlkvy, who died in 2016, was named all-state twice and a Parade All-American in 1957.

Ray Nunamaker is one of District 11’s most decorated wrestling coaches. In 34 years as head coach, he won 468 dual meets and coached eight wrestlers to nine state championships.

Artie Owens was an outstanding running back and track athlete. As a senior, he established a Pennsylvania record with 41 touchdowns in a season. He was a Kodak All-American, and a UPI and AP all-state selection. He was also chosen to the Big 33 Classic.

Milo Sewards won a state title in his first season as basketball coach at Allentown High in 1950. As head coach for the Canaries for 24 seasons, he led his teams to nine league and four District 11 crowns. Sewards, who died in 2003, ended his career with 408 wins, winning over 71 percent of his contests.

Allyssa Vavra made her mark in the swimming pool for the Panthers. She was a five-time state champion and an 18-time All-American during her high school career. She was a 17-time District 11 champ, helping her team win a district team title in 2008. She also established a school record in 200 IM.
