Lehigh Elementary School project information available

Detailed information on Northampton Area School District’s proposed Lehigh Elementary School project - the Act 34 hearing booklet - is now available on the NASD website for the public’s viewing.

An Act 34 hearing, advertising for the hearing, availability of the booklet and project cost was approved by a unanimous 9-0 vote, as recommended by the NASD administration, at the Sept. 10 board of education meeting.

The public hearing is to be held 5:30 p.m. Oct. 8 in the cafeteria of Northampton Area High School, 1619 Laubach Ave., Northampton.

The Pennsylvania School Code Act 34 of 1973 governs the construction of a new school building.

The project for the new elementary school is to be built along Blue Mountain Road, Lehigh Township, at the location of the old school, at a maximum construction cost of $25,535,000 and a maximum project cost of $35,788,356.

In other business at the Sept. 10 meeting, school directors voted 9-0 to:

Continue the community education program, with Sandra Bischof as coordinator of the program, for the 2018-19 school year, and approve the list of anticipated community education classes and roster of instructors with stipends for fall 2018;

Accept the resignations of Robert Hahn, boys basketball coach, Northampton Area Middle School, effective Aug. 28; Paula Ulrich, English Language teacher, for retirement, effective Jan. 5, 2019; Eugene Hatcher, district security officer, for retirement; Tina Carnathan-Marx, natatorium aide, effective Aug. 28; and Kellie Ryan, hall monitor, effective Aug. 31;

Voluntary transfer of Lisa King, library instructional assistant, NAHS, to special education 12-month secretary, effective date dependent upon finding a replacement for her, at $17.43 per hour, with benefits;

Professional teaching staff employees as potential homebound instructors, retroactive to Aug. 27, 2018, through the last day of the 2018-19 school year, at the hourly rate of bachelor’s degree, $45.69 per hour, and master’s degree, $50.15 per hour;

Mentor-inductee list for 2018-19 school year, including stipend payment for the 2018-19 school year;

Addition to the athletic coaching staff members and stipends list for the 2018-19 school year;

Additions and deletions to the substitute listing for the 2018-19 school year;

Revised master district volunteer list for the 2018-19 school year;

Michelle Schoeneberger to attend the 2018 Pennsylvania Science Teachers Association Conference, State College, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, at an approximate cost of $492.39, and 2018 Pennsylvania Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Conference, Hershey, Nov. 19-20, at an approximate cost of $500.95, both included in the 2018-19 curriculum budget;

Donna Teklits, Attendance-Child Accounting Professional Association annual conference, Oct. 29-31, at a cost to the district of $949.65;

Adoption of revised policies, effective Sept. 11 for both language instruction educational program for EL learners and student records;

Letter of agreement between NASD and Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 to provide remedial instruction in reading and math to nonproficient students in qualifying nonpublic schools at a cost of $22,914 for instruction, $231 for parent involvement programming and Colonial IU-20 administrative service fee at 3 percent of the total with costs for nonpublic school services covered through 2018-19 Title I grant; and

Letter of agreement between NASD and Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 to provide professional development to nonpublic school teachers through Title IIA grant submission in the amount of $7,520, along with an additional administrative service fee at 8 percent of the total, covered through the 2018-19 Title IIA grant agreement and allocation.
