The Vera Cruz Community Association held its 67th annual Vera Cruz Homecoming community block party at Mystic Chain Park recently.
Guests enjoyed live entertainment from the Rehrig Brothers, The Large Flowerheads and WTAP radio personality Jeffrey “Uncle Jeffrey” Tapler.
There was also a cakewalk, bingo and food along with an antique tractor show, donated from the Old Time Plowboys and local farmers.
Vera Cruz Community Association President, David Lindstrom noted the party this year included more child-friendly activities, such as face painting, an inflatable bounce house, balloon animals and games.
For Lindstrom, serving on the board is a way for him to give back to the community. All donations raised benefit senior citizens and local organizations such as the ladies auxiliary, churches and the fire company.
In addition, the homecoming event is an opportunity to catch up with old friends and to meet new neighbors. Audra Berner, a Vera Cruz volunteer chimed in, saying the picnic “truly is a homecoming.”
A major concern is the “struggle of volunteers,” Lindstrom said. People who are willing to set aside their time and attend meetings is what keeps the association going, year after year.
The next Vera Cruz meeting will be 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Citizen’s Fire Company, 4093 Main Road West, Emmaus.
