William A. Flamish

William A. Flamish, of Whitehall, died Sept. 1, 2018, at home. He was the husband of Doris (Clauser) Flamish for 55 years.

Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Yanger) Flamish.

He was 1944 graduate of Allentown High School, where he lettered in both football (under coach J. Birney Crum) and track. He was inducted into the Allentown-William Allen High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a 1949 graduate from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. While there, he played in two Sugar Bowls.

He was an assistant football coach at the UNC-Chapel Hill; a freshman coach at Colby College, Waterville, Maine; and an assistant coach at Muhlenberg College, Allentown. He was at Muhlenberg from 1956-1989, served as professor emeritus in physical education and was the track and cross-country teams’ head coach for 32 years.

He worked in the industrial engineering department of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. He owned and operated Bill Flamish Real Estate for 26 years and earlier worked with both Bill Huber and Rudy Amelio Real Estate.

He bowled in the Muhlenberg faculty league and had a 298 bowling game. He was a member of the Whitehall Township Authority and was a past member of the Kiwanis Club, Allentown.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Amy Flamish-Pimentel and her husband Gonzalo of Whitehall and Maria and her husband Gregory Sussman of South Whitehall; five grandchildren, William, Anna, Alexander, Daniela and Javier; a brother, Joseph of Bethlehem; and Virginia Flamish of Allentown.

He was predeceased by four sisters, Rose Flamish, Elsie Breidinger, Viola Max and Margaret Flamish; and a brother, Frank.

There will be a memorial service 2 p.m. Sept. 16 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 2510 Livingston St., Allentown.

Contributions may be made to the annual William A. Flamish Award in Neuroscience at Muhlenberg College, to acknowledge a student who has achieved outstanding excellence in the field of neuroscience.
