Golf team gets two wins

The Whitehall golf team won two matches last week, defeating Pocono Mountain West and East Stroudsburg South at Allentown Municipal Golf Course, but those wins may have been overshadowed by a an unbelievable performance on back-to-back holes by Corinne Deichmeister during their Aug. 21 match.

The senior shot an eagle on the par-four fourth hole, and then if that wasn’t spectacular enough, she drilled a hole-in-one on the following hole, a par-three that covered about 100 yards.

Deichmeister, who’s been playing varsity for three years, said that she drove the green on the par four, landing just a yard away from the cup. From that point, she tapped in for the eagle.

“I didn’t know I hit it that far, and my friend [in the foursome ahead of us], said it almost hit him in the ankle,” said Deichmeister. “I was really excited. I was bouncing up and down.”

On the par three she took an eight iron out of her bag and sailed the ball on to the green. She said that it took a hop and landed in the hole. Once it happened, the senior said her jaw just dropped. Her reaction was met with the feeling of ‘did I really just do that’ as she now had an ace and an eagle on back-to-back holes.

Deichmeister didn’t believe she’d experience those feelings this early in her golfing career.

“I didn’t think I’d get that until I played a lot longer,” said Deichmeister.

Jeff Wambold, general manager of the Allentown Municipal Golf Course, said that he’s never heard of that being done before at the course. He said that it’s rare for a player to make two eagles in the same round, let alone dropping an eagle and a hole-in-one on back-to-back holes.

“It’s a very rare occurrence,” said Wambold.

He said that with all the rain they moved the pin up farther, so the fourth hole played a bit shorter than its listed length of 317 yards.

Head coach John Conrad watched as the senior needed only three strokes to complete those two holes.

“It was amazing, she pulled off a little history,” said Conrad.

Conrad said that Nick Rohn shot his best round of the year so far at Allentown Municipal, during the PMW quad match, carding an 86. Still, Conrad believes the best is yet to come from his talented senior.

He’s also encouraged by the development of Mark Matusinsky. Conrad said that he’s been getting big contributions from the senior this season. He’s consistently shot in the low 90s, shaving about 10 strokes off his average from last season.

The same could be said for Antonio Capille. Conrad said that Capille has posted two rounds in the low 90s so far this season. Conrad said that the junior began to shave strokes off his game as the season wore on last year.

“He was starting to pick it up last season and now is carrying it through,” said Conrad.

Leah Coleman, who shot an 86 in the quad match, continues to impress. Conrad said that she’s been in the 80s throughout all their matches this season.

The victory over the Panthers was part of a quad match that also featured Allentown Central Catholic and Liberty. They followed that with a win against ESS, 469-524. Those wins puts them at 4-6 on the season.

Conrad said that as in years past, he believes there are teams they should beat, teams they could beat, and teams that they probably won’t beat. He felt that their losses to Bethlehem Catholic and Easton on Aug. 23 at Allentown Municipal fell into the could category and just couldn’t push past their EPC counterparts.

“We just came up short,” said Conrad.

He said that they’ll put those losses behind them and focus on winning their upcoming matches.
