In concert, The Offspring just wants to have fun

The Offspring,1990s’ pop-punk hit-makers, bring their “Never-Ending Summer” tour to the Great Allentown Fair Aug. 29. The concert, which includes Gym Class Heroes, starts at 7 p.m. at the Fairgrounds Grandstand.

The tour features another popular alt-pop 1990s’ band, 311, as co-headliner. The Offspring has released a limited edition vinyl release of the group’s cover version of the 311 song “Down” to coincide with the co-headlining tour.

“Touring with 311 is something we have done before,” says Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman, guitarist for The Offspring, in a phone interview.

“We have different sounds, but draw from the same audience. Our fan base is similar.

“Our version of ‘Down’ is a little more frenetic,” Wasserman says. “We have a little more energy.”

The Offspring is credited, along with bands like Green Day and Rancid, with reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the 1990s. Hits like “Self Esteem,” “Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)” and “Why Don’t You Get a Job” propelled The Offspring to become global music stars, selling more than 40 million albums.

The Offspring is noted for its witty and visually-exciting videos in the mid- to late-1990s when MTV was still dominating the viewing habits of teens with music videos.

“Growing up in punk rock, we wanted to carry a lot of that humor into our videos,” says Wasserman. “It’s a part of who we are, as well. We like to have fun.”

On tour, the band is expected to play some of its 1990s favorites, along with newer material and covers. “One of the covers we do goes over really well with the audience,” Wasserman says, “but I’ll keep that a secret. You’ll have to come to see the show to find out.”

Wasserman believes The Offspring’s punk rock fans might be surprised to find out that one of the group’s biggest musical influences is 1960s’ folk-rockers, Simon and Garfunkel.

“Back when we started, Dexter [The Offspring’s lead singer] and I were really into Simon and Garfunkel and Creedence Clearwater Revival. We listened to a lot of that.”

Wasserman is proud of The Offspring’s history but looks with eagerness to the future.

“In a few years I might be a little grayer,” he said, “and hopefully a little skinnier, but I’ll still be doing what I love and being productive. We will still be doing the band and coming out with real meat and potatoes Offspring records.

“Right now I just feel so lucky to be doing this. We have a great time. We have a lot of great fans and we make sure the concert experience is well worth it to them.”
