LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

SALISBURY TOWNSHIP

Having the second annual National Night Out community gathering at Salisbury Middle School, along Devonshire Road in the community’s western portion, provided a dry backup as outside activities were awash in a downpour shortly after the 6 p.m. start of the community gathering Aug. 7.

In addition to National Night Out, an annual community building campaign which promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie, the event was also a community event planned by Salisbury’s Recreation Advisory Committee member Kim Ringhoffer.

According to Det. Christopher Casey, lead organizer for the Salisbury Police Department, “We were able to quickly switch to indoor activities as soon as the rain started and the games, bingo and food service went on just as we had planned. People greeted their neighbors and socialized just as they would have outdoors.”

During a few breaks in the weather, residents ventured back outside for emergency vehicle demonstrations, chatted with township first responders and jumped in the bounce toys set up along the side yard of the school. A demonstration of the capabilities of the township police department’s aerial drone drew interest from youngsters and adults.

Music was provided by B-Flat Entertainment Services and a Boardwalk Bites Food Truck was parked in the front parking lot for fried Oreos, fries and other items.

Casey estimated the number of residents at about 400, saying the middle school cafeteria was “full, but not overwhelmed” as attendees were interspersed over the two hour evening gathering 6 to 8 p.m.

Inside, residents registered for a basket raffle, sampled baked goods, played bingo and other games and enjoyed hot dogs, meatball sandwiches and beverages and socialized with friends and neighbors. Youngsters caught up with friends they knew from Salisbury youth and sports activities and organizers said they heard “no complaints” about the weather.

Casey said the donation jars placed throughout the cafeteria appeared to be full, providing a head start to planning for next year’s National Night Out gathering.

“As we had hoped, this year’s turnout probably was better than last year – and next year we’ll top that,” Casey said with confidence.
