Lowhill to update July board minutes

Lowhill Township Supervisors’ Chairman Richard Hughes began the board’s Aug. 2 meeting asking for a motion to approve the minutes from July.

Treasurer Robb Werley said it should be included in the minutes that he abstained from voting for approval of the land development final plan for a proposed office at 6768 Kernsville Road on behalf of him and his wife, Brenda.

When that correction is made, Vice Chairman Buddy Wessner motioned to approve the minutes. Werley seconded it.

Werley said he will again abstain from voting.

Supervisors said all changes were made from a technical standpoint but Werley will need to put an additional drainage pipe on the other side of the drainage field to correct a problem with drainage. They also noted the PennDOT permit will need to be revised.

Werley said he spoke with PennDOT, which received the changes, and should respond back by the end of the month.

The board noted there will be nine parking spots, including a spot for handicapped parking.

Based on the comments at the meeting, Hughes made a motion to approve the plan. Wessner seconded the motion.

Roadmaster Joe Kalusky reported that during July the road crew had 13 days of maintenance on the dirt roads, because of all the rain.

They are planning to continue grass mowing, tiger mowing and weed whacking in August.

Lastly, Werley proposed an idea to buy four separate certificate of deposits as the interest rates have increased at New Tripoli Bank.

This would be a strategy for Lowhill to make more interest with money that they have not had to use.

Werley made a motion to take $1 million from the general fund money market and use it to purchase four CDs in a one-, two-, three- and four-year terms from New Tripoli Bank. Each deposit would be approximately $250,000. Wessner seconded the motion.

Harold Handwerk and Donald Christ attended the meeting to tell the board about progress made regarding a possible veterans war memorial for Ontelaunee Park in Lynn Township.

Handwerk said the memorial should include all four Northwestern Lehigh townships.

The group recently visited a veterans memorial in Palmerton park for some ideas. Hughes volunteered to represent Lowhill for the project.

Hughes later moved to have Trick-or-Treat Night 6-8 p.m. Oct. 27. There is no rain date.

In closing, Hughes said road crew worker Terry Stewart was terminated July 27.
