State Police Troop L, Reading, are investigating an arson fire which occurred Aug. 4 at a home at 15619 Kutztown Road, Maxatawny Township, Berks County.
At 11:40 a.m. that day, police received a 911 call from one of the residents of the home, who had fled in order to make the call.
A male, who allegedly had advised his wife to leave the home, was reported to have splashed himself with gasoline and was seen carrying propane tanks into the home, police say.
Shortly thereafter, a fire was reported at the home.
Fire crews responded to the home for a report of a residential structure fire.
During the suppression efforts, a firefighter, who attempted to make entry due to the fact the male was reported to be inside, was injured and suffered burns despite wearing all his protective bunker gear, police say.
The firefighter suffered burns on his left shoulder and damage to his gear.
He was treated and released from the hospital.
The male resident was unaccounted for during the initial fire response and subsequent investigation.
An extensive search of the area was conducted and he was not located.
Later that evening, he was found in West Penn Township, Schuylkill County.
The fire is being investigated by Fire Marshal Trooper Janssen Herb.
State Police Troop, M, Fogelsville, Northern Berks, Fleetwood and Kutztown police departments assisted at the scene.
