Board discusses trails

Speeding traffic along Apple Road was discussed at the Weisenberg Township supervisors June meeting.

Adding a stop sign at the intersection with Red Haven Road was contemplated by the board. However, according to township engineer Stan Wojciechowski, multiple stop signs at intersections should not be used to control speed according to the PennDOT manual.

Striping of the roads to control the width would be a better option, according to Wojciechowski.

Bike trails were discussed with a proposed trail designated for the township. Grant money is available for projects such as this.

The board looked at a map of the Township showing where the proposed bike trail would be located.

The trail would start at the intersection of Claussville and Seipstown roads and proceed west to Golden Key Road.

The trail would proceed to Werleys Corner and eventually meet with Bausch Road in Lowhill Township.

A shorter trail is proposed from Apple Park in Upper Macungie to Claussville in Lowhill Township.

There is an existing bike trail which starts in Upper Macungie where Ziegels Church Road meets Independent Road and proceeds on Ziegels Church, Kecks and Claussville Roads to Route 100.

In other matters, Sherry Rollema asked the board if there was a quiet time for fireworks.

In other words, when should they quit shooting them off. Rollema claimed her neighbors shoot them until late in the night and do it every night. Township Administrator Brian Carl told her there was no ordinance in the township that controlled this. The only ordinance is the one that covers professional displays.

Carl told the board there were 122 fire calls for the year.

Roadmaster Tony Werley noted the road crew was busy doing oil and chip and paving. They helped Heidelberg Township with some projects. Werley wants to have New Smithville Road paved.

He was told PennDOT will be paving Route 863 from Upper Macungie Township to Old 22.

Treasurer Jeff Strauss reported the annual donations to the various organizations that serve the community.

New Tripoli Fire Company and Cetronia Ambulance Corps will each receeive $5,000 while the Recreation Commission, Christ’s Church at Lowhill Food Pantry and the historical society will each receive a donation, yet to be determined.

Chairperson Linda Gorgas made a motion to have Barry Isett and Associates as primary township engineer with Keystone Engineering as the alternate. The motion was carried.

Carl reported on the letter from Lynn Township concerning the proposed memorial committee. The board was interested in the proposal and voted to be included on the committee.

Weisenberg supervervisors recently announced the retirement of Supervisor Thomas Wehr. At that same meeting Chairperson Linda Gorgas appointed Richard Bleiler as supervisor for his replacement.
