Olivia Moyer, recent Whitehall High School graduate, won the Whitehall Area Rotary Club’s inaugural Four-Way Speech Contest at Fellowship Community’s Zentz Community Center April 4.
Sixty-six students entered the contest under the leadership of WHS English teacher Michelle Abbadessa. The top five were chosen to deliver their speeches in front of Rotary Club members and three judges for a $500 prize.
The other finalists were WHS students Jacky Mansour, Noah Borgman, Keziah Lopes and Natalia Montero. Each speech was five to seven minutes long and was graded on content, organization and delivery.
The criteria for the Rotary Club’s test included truth, fairness, good will and community benefit. Half of the $500 prize was provided by Whitehall Area Rotary Club, with Fellowship Community providing a match.
Moyer’s speech on gun control in America was very well received by those in attendance. She is planning to major in elementary education at Millersville University in the fall.
