KOSPIA FARMS

Kospia Farms, 2288 State St., Alburtis, held a fundraiser July 21 to benefit Animals in Distress, a nonprofit sanctuary for animals who have little or no hope elsewhere. Every animal is admitted, with Animals in Distress providing medical care, behavioral rehabilitation, food, shelter, and most important of all, love, until a suitable new home can be found. No animal is killed because it is unwanted, too old or injured.

Kospia Farms is a 26-acre seasonal retail nursery specializing in locally grown plant products with over 45 years experience providing landscape and hardscape services. A store on the 26-acre property offers home decor items and gifts made by over 80 local artists and businesses and outdoor furniture, fire pits, umbrellas, pottery and accessories for outdoor living spaces.

The all-day event included live music by Angela Evans Duo and Deer Hill Trio, food, an Angels on Wheels ice cream truck, live bee hive demo by Funny Farm Apiaries, a photo booth, Chinese auction, children’s activities, face painting, a bake sale and 50/50, vendor booths and gift bags for the first 100 people.

A live radiothon with Bobby Gunther Walsh and Dan Holzman of NewsRadio 790 WAEB was also part of the event. The pair had worked all week to reach their fundraising goal for Animals in Distress.

In spite of the rain, and with the help of Walsh and Holzman, approximately $2,500 was raised through sales, vendors who donated 10 percent of all purchases made that day, and money raised through donations received at the Animals in Distress booth. More was raised this year than last.

“This is the third year we are supporting Animals in Distress,” Maureen Kospia said. “We want to do everything we can to help them out.”

Walsh said, “Last year $141,900 was raised for the shelter.”

Walsh said he has been helping the organization for 35 years.

Walsh later said a total of $158,314 was raised this year for Animals in Distress.

“The sponsors, the listeners and the community deserve tremendous credit for their efforts in reaching this all-time high amount,” Walsh said.
