Dance ‘Crazy’ at Playhouse
“I got rhythm, I got music, I got my man
Who could ask for anything more?”
Most everyone can hum the tune, but not many know it’s source.
You can see the full song and dance in “Crazy for You,” with classic Gershwin music, which takes the stage July 27, 28 and Aug. 3-5 and Aug. 9-12, at the Pennsylvania Playhouse, Bethlehem.
“Crazy for You” is the tap-dancing filled tale of a stage-struck New Yorker who falls for a gal he should not get close to. The musical has had audiences dancing in their seats since its debut on Broadway in 1992.
“Crazy for You” is a romantic comedy musical with a book by Ken Ludwig, lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and music by George Gershwin. Songs include “I’ve Got Rhythm,” “Embraceable You,” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It.”
Billed as “The new Gershwin musical comedy,” it is based on the songwriting brother’s 1930 musical, “Girl Crazy,” but includes songs from their other shows. The Broadway production of “Crazy for You” received the 1992 Tony Award.
In the musical, a young New York banker, Bobby Child, is sent to Deadrock, Nev., to foreclose on a rundown theater. While there, he falls in love with Polly Baker.
Jim Vivian, director of the Pennsylvania Playhouse production, believes the music is exactly what makes the show so enduringly popular. “It’s classic American music,” he says. “Everyone loves this style. It’s light-hearted and the tap-dancing is fantastic. It just makes your heart sing.”
Tap-dancing is featured throughout the musical, which takes the audience back in time to the 1930s through dance, costumes and song. Music director is Nancy Shumaker and choreographer is Joey M. Schubert for the Pennsylvania Playhouse production.
“It’s very much escapism,” says Vivian. “It’s a great love story with a Fred and Ginger feel. And, of course, ‘I’ve Got Rhythm’ is the mother of all tap-dancing numbers. We’ve just got terrific dancers. It’s a tremendous cast.”
The cast includes Vanessa Ruggiero and Tyler Fernandez, who play the leads Polly and Bobby, respectively, and Brian Houp, Christina Check, Victoria Scovens, Kris Swanson and a tap-dancing cast of 28, including the “Follies” showgirls in grand costumes.
The cast is a large part of what makes this production so special for Vivian.
“It’s a real example of a theater family,” he says. “We are one solid group. It’s been a terrific experience from start to finish. Whoever comes to the show will leave in an upbeat mood. ‘Crazy for You’ is a feel-good tap-dancing extravaganza.”
