SALISBURY RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Salisbury Recreation Advisory Committee met July 16 for an update on parks and activities in the township. The committee meets every two months.

Director Kim Ringhoffer provided a report on the planned Community Day in conjunction with the police department’s National Night Out scheduled 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 7.

Salisbury residents are encouraged to attend the event on the front lawn of Salisbury Middle School, 3301 Devonshire Road. The event will include a dunk tank, free hot dogs and soda, an obstacle course, a moon bounce, a basket raffle, bingo inside the school, police and fire vehicles, a 50/50 drawing, music provided by B-Flat Entertainment Services, home safety tips and neighborhood watch information.

Girl Scouts will have a table to provide information, Texas Roadhouse will attend with their mascots and the Boardwalk Bites food truck will also be on site. The Salisbury Press will also have the popular newspaper game available for chances to win prizes.

The event also includes a baking contest – bring your favorite dessert and you may win a prize. For more information, or if you are interested in submitting a dessert or making a donation for the basket raffle, email Det. Chris Casey at ccasey@salisburytownshippa.org.

In other business, committee member Frank Adamcik noted the geese are starting to re-populate at Laubach Park. Committee members said it was their understanding the eggs are still being treated and the funds were allocated by Salisbury Township commissioners. Adamcik noted there were 12 geese on the baseball field during a recent visit to Laubach Park and there were many droppings on the big field. Adamcik said the conditions on the fields at Laubach are as expected.

The committee gave accolades to Public Works Director John Andreas who when called at noon on a game day, sent workers to Laubach at 1 p.m. to put mix on the field at second base in preparation for use later that afternoon.

Adamcik mentioned the benches at Dodson Park have not yet been repaired.

Recreation Director Genny Baillie said she will follow-up with Andreas for a completion date.

Committee member Frank McCullough reported it was a bad season with the wind and the rain at the parks. McCullough said he met public works personnel at Lindberg Park to put mix on the fields recently. McCullough noted he picked up 10 to 15 empty bottles left by three males who were at the park the night before. McCullough also noted his disappointment with the lack of progress at Lindberg Park. He said if they had known the construction would not have begun when scheduled, the playground program could have been held at Lindberg Park this year.

Baillie said the decision was made not to hold the playground program at Lindberg because the construction was planned to begin at the same time as the playground program. Baillie said the delay happened because the township did not receive any bids for the electrical work so the work had to be re-bid.

Director Pat Jacoby and Baillie provided a report on the summer playground program. There are approximately 100 registered students at Green Acres Park, 50 to 60 at Devonshire Park and 75 at Laubach Park. Baillie said there were 38 students at the movie night at Green Acres and 16 at Laubach Park’s movie night. She said the program is going well despite the hot weather.

Baillie also thanked Sgt. Don Sabo and Fire Inspector Kyle Mertl for providing CPR, first aid and AED training for all playground counselors prior to the start of the program.

McCullough said the counselors are doing a wonderful job.

It was announced the committee will hold the fall park tours during the week of Sept. 10.

The next meeting of the Recreation Advisory Committee will be held 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17 in the township municipal building.
