EMMAUS KIWANIS CLUB

The Kiwanis Club of Emmaus and the Emmaus Kiwanis Foundation recently announced the winners of the 2018 scholarships awarded to graduating Emmaus High School seniors by the club and the foundation.

The Walter Stoudt Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Caitlin Sexton, of Allentown. Sexton will attend the University of Pittsburgh and major in chemical engineering. This award is based on academics, need and leadership in school and civic activities, including active membership in the EHS Key Club. The award honors the first president and co-founder of the Emmaus Kiwanis Club, which was chartered in 1951.

The Dr. Warren Hamscher Memorial Scholarship was awarded to James Haag, of Macungie. Haag will attend Northeastern University, studying finance and economics. This award is based on academics, need and demonstrated leadership in sports. The award honors the other co-founder of the Emmaus Kiwanis Club.

The Kiwanis Service Award was awarded to Eve Hein, of Emmaus. Hein will attend the University of New Haven and major in forensic psychology. This award recognizes Hein’s wide range of service activities to her school and community.

The Larry Carraher Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Megan Purinton, of Alburtis. Purinton will attend the University of Delaware and major in physical therapy. This award, chosen by the family of Larry Carraher, a past president and active EHS supporter, recognizes academics, need and excellence in athletics.

The Donald W. and Stella V. Trump Memorial Scholarship honors the legacy of former Shoemaker Elementary School teacher Donald W. Trump and his wife. The scholarship is awarded based on academics and need to a student who will attend a Pennsylvania public university, majoring in education, which reflects Trump’s values. This award was given to Hannah Gesicki, of Emmaus, who will attend Kutztown University and major in elementary education.

The Emmaus Kiwanis Foundation awards about $6,000 annually in scholarships and other leadership grants to deserving students in the East Penn School District.

Funds for these awards come, in part, from the revenues generated by the Emmaus Kiwanis Club’s annual Pancake Festival in June and other fundraising activities throughout the year.
