Veterans memorial planned

Don Christ and Bill Dellicker attended the July 19 meeting of Heidelberg Township supervisors.

Lynn Township is asking the other three townships within the Northwestern Lehigh School District to participate in planning for a veterans memorial at Ontelaunee Park.

Christ said Lynn wrote to the other townships and a committee has been formed to plan and gather information about veterans since the War of 1812.

Dellicker said they visited Palmerton to see its memorial and ask about fundraising ideas.

He said the design is still preliminary. The letter gave reasons why one memorial instead of four would be better for the area.

Each township should have a member attend the committee meetings to present that township’s ideas.

Christ said there would be monthly meetings at this time but when plans moved along they would probably be more frequent.

The county does not have a listing of veterans so someone will have to go to churches to check records and put up notices.

Supervisor Steve Bachman called the memorial a fantastic idea and the board approved taking part in the committee.

In other matters, Goodwill Fire Company, Germansville, has been talking with vendors about the purchase of a new truck.

The company will have a stand at the Aug. 18 Night in the Country.

Northern Valley Ambulance Corps personnel responded to 16 calls in June, answering 94 percent of all calls with a 9.5-minute response time.

Dianne Huber has shown interest in serving as the liaison between the townships and NOVA. Supervisors will discuss it with her.

Supervisor Jake Jakum said the office is clearing out files with some things being filed electronically. The new map and township information pamphlets are almost ready.

Bachman said the Northwestern Recreation Commission is trying to find a less expense way to construct the walking trail. He said they were told an 8-foot trail would be less expensive than the planned 6-foot but Engineer Chris Noll said it would require redoing all the engineering work.

Bachman said the prevailing wage requirement is what put the price so far over expectations – $193,000 instead of $80,000.

There was also a possibility discussed at the recreation commission meeting that townships may be able to help out by doing some work.

Roadmaster Kevin Huber said oil and chipping is finished in all the townships. Heidelberg is doing a second round of mowing.

Township Emergency Management Coordinator Josh Bingham told the board part of the emergency operations plan has been forwarded. The draft should be completed in August or September.

The Green Light Go for the intersection at Route 309 and Northwest Road has been delayed until December.

The lights will make use of a battery, which Huber said cost $7,000.

In the meantime Eric Shallhammer of Goodwill Fire Company asked if the township would provide four-way collapsible stop signs for emergency use.

Although Bachman was against the fireworks ordinance as it would open up many issues for the township, it was approved.

Firework displays now require township permits and a bond for liability protection.
