LOWER MACUNGIE COLUMN

The Lower Macungie Garden Club will meet 1 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Lower Macungie Township Community Center.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Aug. 7 and 21 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

The Lower Macungie Community Center offers a number of activities. Classes include adult and youth tennis lessons, adult and youth sewing camps, Tech Trio, spy training, indoor sports camp, nature explorers, art camp, Tiny Dancers Princess Camp, Mad Science Camp and Creative Arts Theatre Camp. Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The site is closed Tuesday and Thursday. Be prepared to show photo I.D. as proof of residency.

The Lower Macungie Pool is open daily noon to 8 p.m. through July 31. August hours are noon to 7 p.m. There will be music by New Passages with Randy and Margaret Ritter 2 to 4 p.m. July 28. There will be a Wildlands Conservancy presentation 2 p.m. July 29. There will be a DJ pool party with Wesley Works 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 4. For more information, check the website www.lowermac.org.

The Main Street Cruisers will perform 7 to 9 p.m. July 20 at the Hills at Lockridge Park. Bootleg Express will perform 6 to 9 p.m. July 28 at East Texas Park. The Marine Band will perform 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 11 at East Texas Park. Schools Out Band will perform 6 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at East Texas Park.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. Aug. 1 to discuss “America’s First Daughter” by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamole. The book for September will be “Cooking for Picasso” by Camille Aubra.

The Great Decisions program by the Foreign Policy Association 6 p.m. Wednesdays will continue through Aug. 15. Program booklets are available at the library. Each session includes a 30-minute video followed by a discussion. The topics include the Media and Foreign Policy; Turkey: A Partner in Crisis; U.S. Global Engagement and the Military; South Africa’s Fragile Democracy and Global Health: Progress & Challenges.

Board game lovers are welcome to “Get in the Game” 5 to 7 p.m. July 19 for games with family and friends.

Readers Report sessions will be held July 24 and Aug. 14. Children are welcome to stop by and talk with the library staff about their summer. There will also be a special activity.

There will be a program “Melody Makers” for grades first through fifth 10:30 a.m. July 21. Children will explore different types of music and dance through stories, crafts and songs.

There will be a Lower Macungie Library dance 6 to 8 p.m. July 24 featuring DJ Jimbo playing oldies, classic rock and more.

Nailed It! Cupcake Decorating Challenge for students in grades six through 12 will be 2 to 3 p.m. July 26. Materials will be provided.

Family Fun Night July 23 will feature a community drum circle.

Teen Thursdays will be offered for students entering grades six through 12. There will be a teen movie afternoon 2 p.m. July 20 for students in grades six through 12.

Happy Birthday, Harry Potter! will be held 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 30. All ages are welcome to come as their favorite witch or wizard and try activities, games and crafts.

The next Friends meeting is 10 a.m. Sept. 15 in the library. New Friends of Lower Macungie Library are welcome.

Due to the library construction, donations will not be accepted for the Friends Fall Book Sale until Aug. 1. Friends members will begin sorting donations Thursday mornings in August.

The men of the family just returned from a week of Scout camp with lots of stories. One morning Matt told Ben about his dream the night before about how he had forgotten his passport. Ben replied, “Wow, Dad, I had the same dream you had.” Matt said, “Really?” Ben said, “No, I’m just kidding!”
