Ducks, geese find new home in condominium pond

Ten ducklings and two Toulouse geese have found a new home in the pond at Cross Keys Condominiums, Ponds Edge Lane, Upper Macungie Township.

The ducklings were released into the pond during a duck and doughnut event June 30 at the condominiums.

Gary Fritz, secretary for the Cross Keys Condominium Association, said the pond had deteriorated but it is the highlight of the condominium development.

The 32-unit development started in 1988.

With reserve funds, the condominium association had the pond restored by Season After Season in Easton.

“There have always been geese in the pond,” Fritz said. “The 10 ducklings are white crested ducks from California.

“We will be having a contest to name the ducklings.”

The two geese are named Helen and Phil after Helen and Phil Berk, two of the original Cross Keys Condominium residents.

“Phil has passed away but Helen is still alive,” Fritz said.

In addition to the 10 ducklings and two geese, there is a mother mallard and her six babies.

“The pond is also stocked with 4,500 flat-head minnows, 500 shiners, 500 goldfish, 100 channel catfish, 100 large mouth bass, and 10 red-eared slider turtles,” Fritz said.

There has been a lot of community participation in restoring the pond.

“Mary Beck, president of the condominium association, and her friend, Kathy D’Angelo, painted the Cross Keys sign out front,” Fritz said.

Art Raymond is the vice president of the condominium association.

Cross Keys Condominiums is managed by Christine Gensey, property manager with Four Star Property Management, Bath.
