David Kucharczuk, of Whitehall, has won an all-expenses-paid scholarship to attend an externship in chef Emeril Lagasse’s restaurants in New Orleans. Kucharczuk competed with seven other Northampton Community College culinary arts students in a “Chopped”-style cook-off in May. Initially, the eight students were told only three would win an all-expenses-paid scholarship to attend an externship in one of Lagasse’s restaurants in 2019 over winter break.
At the ninth annual Lehigh Valley Food and Wine Festival June 1, Lagasse himself made the surprise announcement at his cooking demo at the Sands Bethlehem that all eight students would be awarded this coveted opportunity.
“Since the beginning of my career, I have believed that mentoring is very important. By participating in the Lehigh Valley Food & Wine Festival, I can provide scholarships for students who have a passion for the culinary industry to get firsthand, real-world experience in my New Orleans’ restaurants. This is a great weekend for us to make not only that possible, but to help provide scholarships to other students at Northampton Community College,” Lagasse said.
