Salisbury Legion manager Scott Heppenheimer is kind of superstitious. When his team jumped out to a 9-0 start to the season, he decided not to invite his wife to any of their games so as to keep the winning streak going. From here on out, you may see Mrs. Heppenheimer at some games.

Salisbury suffered its first loss of the season in its 10th game when it fell to South Parkland 2-1. Just a day earlier, Salisbury had downed the Trojans 6-1.

Since suffering their first loss, the Falcons bounced back to beat Coplay and then split a double-header with Lower Macungie with both games ending in 3-2 scores.

The end result is that Salisbury is 11-2 and leading the Lehigh Valley Legion regular season standings over Lower Macungie (10-4) and South Parkland (9-5).

One of the keys for Salisbury has been strong pitching. Through their 13 games, they have allowed just 30 runs on the season, by far the lowest number in the league. Andrew Sukanick was just named the league’s Pitcher of the Week after he picked up three wins and allowed just one hit in 14 innings. He also struck out 11 batters over the course of the week.

“Our pitching is definitely a strength on this team,” said Heppenheimer. “We’ve got a few kids that we can run out there and feel confident with any of them.”

In their win over Coplay, Quinn and Cole Warmkessel handled the work on the mound, holding Coplay to just two runs in the game. Sukanick came back to get the win over Lower Macungie on Sunday and Lucas Irwin suffered a tough loss in the second game of the double-header. Taylor Linn has been strong in relief for the Falcons as well.

While the pitching has been the selling point for Salisbury, the offense isn’t too shabby either. The Falcons have scored just under six runs per game on the season.

“We’re not always going to put up big numbers but we can handle the bats pretty well,” said Heppenheimer. “We may struggle a little here and there at the plate but overall we’ve got guys who can hit.”

The regular season wraps up on Sunday and the Falcons have home games against Northern Valley (6-6), Southern Lehigh (3-10) and Emmaus (7-7) before heading into the double-elimination postseason tournament.
