Time for “Ragtime”: The hit musical, “Ragtime,” continues through July 1 at the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. The musical is based on the 1975 novel by E.L. Doctorow, with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and book by Terrence McNally, for which McNally received a Tony Award for best book of a musical in 1998 (the original Broadway production received 13 Tony nominations). “Ragtime” has three interlocking plots told in story and song: that of a New Rochelle, N.Y., community (above); an immigrant and his aspirations, and a Harlem piano player and his wrongs. The show, presented on the Main Stage, Labuda Center for the Performing Arts, DeSales University, Center Valley, features a cast of 40, who sing and dance in a Broadway-quality production with a 15-piece orchestra. “Tale as old as time”: “Beauty And The Beast” continues through July 1 at Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre. The musical is paced by a great score of memorable songs: “Belle,” “Be Our Guest” and, of course, the title song. With music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and book by Linda Wolverton, the show, opened in 1994 on Broadway, receiving nine Tony Award nominations. The musical has additional songs that aren’t in the 1991 feature animation film. The show, presented in Empie Theatre, Baker Center for the Arts, Muhlenberg College, Allentown, has a cast of 35 and an 11-piece orchestra. It’s an entertaining musical for the entire family. If you can’t get to Disney World or Disneyland, “Beauty And The Beast” is a delightful summer getaway. Andrew Dice Clay is an American comedian and actor who came to prominence in the late 1980s with the persona of “The Diceman.” Clay has been in several movies, including “The Adventures Of Ford Fairline” (1990) and “Blue Jasmine” (2013).
