MACUNGIE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The recent incident at Eyer Middle School with the discovery of a single round of ammunition found in the stairwell of the school, sparked a conversation at the June 18 Macungie Borough Council meeting to have a greater police presence at the schools. The police have a presence already but they want to be more active only not on a scheduled basis.
In other news, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation replaced curbing in some areas and the borough will begin the transformation of the sidewalks. Pavers will be used three feet from the curb.
Mayor Ronald Conrad reported spending time with the fire department and said everything is running smoothly.
Residents from Village Walk are concerned about drivers not stopping at a stop sign at West End Trail and Village Walk Drive. They worried about children getting hit by a car. Macungie police reported parking at the stop sign multiple times with no problems noted. Residents gave suggestions on ways the police could enforce the traffic signs.
Mysterious calls have been coming to residents within the borough and outside of the borough from Macungie Police Department in the early morning hours. There is no one on the phone when the call is answered. Police have determined this is called “spoofing” and are currently investigating the origin of the calls.
The office of state Sen. Pat Browne, R-16th, was asked to look for a grant for the borough to obtain the Project Lifesaver system. “Project Lifesaver is the premier search and rescue program” operated by police departments and is “strategically designed for ‘at risk’ individuals who are prone to the life-threatening behavior of wandering. The primary mission of Project Lifesaver is to provide timely response to save lives and reduce potential injury for adults and children with the propensity to wander due to a cognitive condition,” according to the website.
Borough Manager Chris Boehm requested to issue a request for qualifications for a person to come into the borough and analyze best ways to utilize borough assets.
Council has approved the design for the sign at Macungie Institute.
The borough is looking to PennDOT for additional information for streetscape billing. The borough is withholding payment of one invoice until more information is received.
The sewer lateral ordinance which had been revised by the solicitor was approved.
The residential rental ordinance was put aside temporarily, awaiting another attorney’s actions.
Council viewed the Macungie financial statements. It was advised by the auditors the borough should have additional personnel handling the financial affairs. Council President Chris Becker and Boehm believe they have a good handle on the borough’s financial affairs.
An executive session was held to discuss personnel matters.
