LV Carpenter Cup team goes 1-1 in Philly
The Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup team went 1-1 in this year’s tournament.
The team won it’s opening game 10-7 over the Suburban One League National and Bicentennial Division All-Stars.
The LV franchise was ousted in the second round of the single-elimination tournament 26-9 by Delaware North’s team.
The event, a showcase for high school players sponsored by the Philadelphia Phillies, is held annually at FDR Park in Philadelphia with the semifinals and finals played at the Phillies’ home, Citizen’s Bank Park. It features high school all-star teams from eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware.
The Lehigh Valley team was down 4-0 early in its opening game before getting on the board in the bottom of the second inning when three Emmaus players (Adam LeMaster, Justus Darville and Austin McEllroy) reached base. LeMaster and McEllroy drew walks. Darville was hit by a pitch.
Ryan King (Palmerton) singled to push home one run and another came home on a double play ball to make it 4-2.
Emmaus’ Brandon Robinson singled to start the third inning. He eventually scored on a Luke Storm (Easton) single.
The SOL team pushed it’s lead to 6-3 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.
Lehigh Valley struck back in the fifth when Brittain Shander (Northampton) and Benjamin Stokes (Stroudsburg) singled before Emmett McCauley (Stroudsburg) walked to load the bases.
Emmaus’ Evan Marushak (1-for-3, 3RBIs) hit a base-clearing triple and then scored on a Zach Transue (Pocono Mountain East) single for a 7-6 lead.
Lehigh Valley tacked on another run in the sixth when Zech Lambert (Northampton) singled and came home on a Stokes triple.
Lambert (2-for-2) came up with another single in the eighth. Shander (2-for-3, 2 runs) followed with a double before Stokes (2-for-2, RBI, run) walked to load the bases. Two runs scored on a single by McCauley to give LV a 10-6 lead en route to the 10-7 win last Thursday afternoon.
LV pitchers did a fine job holding back the SOL team. Parkland’s Adam Smith (2 IP, 6 hits, 1 earned run) got the start. Steve Luke (Notre Dame GP) went three innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs. Emmaus’ Dylan Lehman pitched the next three innings and allowed just one hit while striking out four. Parkland’s AJ Palumbo and Koby Staivecki finished off the win.
The LV team was back in action at FDR Park on Monday morning against Delaware North, which scored two or more runs in every innings except the sixth, in which it scored one run, for a 26-9 win. Lehigh Valley committed seven errors in the game.
McEllroy went 2-for-2 in the loss, while teammates Storm, Robinson, Marushak, Ben Serfass (Palmerton), Nick Stannard (Freedom), Lambert and Shander had one hit each. The LV was out-hit 22-10 in the loss.
Lehigh Valley used six different pitchers in the loss with none lasting more than an inning and two thirds.
