LOWER MACUNGIE COLUMN

The Lower Macungie Pool is open daily noon to 8 p.m. through July 31. The pool will close 4:45 p.m. June 25 and July 2 and 12 for swim meets. For more information, check the website www.lowermac.org.

A summer kickoff party will be held 1 to 5 p.m. June 24 with Bar None Entertainment 1 to 3 p.m. and a mermaid visit 3 to 5 p.m. On July 13 there will be a disc jockey pool party with Wesley Works 5 to 7 p.m. The mermaid will be back at the pool 2 to 4 p.m. July 18.

Concordia Lutheran Church will hold Vacation Bible School “Splash Canyon” 9 a.m. to noon June 25 to 29 for students in pre-kindergarten through grade six. For registration information, contact the church at 610-965-3265.

The Large Flowerheads will perform 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 29 at the Hills at Lockridge Park. The Pioneer Band will perform 7 p.m. July 7 at East Texas Park. Mark James & Country Sunset Band will perform 6 to 8 p.m. July 13 at the Hills at Lockridge Park. The Main Street Cruisers will perform 7 to 9 p.m. July 20 at the Hills at Lockridge Park.

Concordia Lutheran Church will hold a fall festival 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 20. The church is seeking vendors and crafters who would be interested in participating. The Lower Macungie Garden Club will meet 1 p.m. July 11 at the Lower Macungie Township Community Center.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon July 3 and 17 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

The community center offers a number of activities. Classes include adult and youth tennis lessons, adult and youth sewing camps, tech trio, spy training, indoor sports camp, nature explorers, art camp, tiny dancers princess camp, mad science camp and creative arts theatre camp. Macungie Ambulance will offer “Family and Friends” basic CPR training 6 to 8 p.m. July 11 at the community center.

Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The center is closed Tuesday and Thursday. Be prepared to show a photo identification as proof of residency.

The Lower Macungie Library will be closed July 4 in observation of Independence Day.

The library book club will meet 10:30 a.m. July 11 to discuss “Call the Midwife” by Jennifer Worth. The book for August will be “America’s First Daughter” by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamole.

The library is currently under construction. As part of the expansion of the community center, the library will add 4,400 square feet for the children’s wing.

Registration is open for the 2018 summer reading program “Libraries Rock” for children ages two through sixth grade. Registration can be completed online or at the library. Students entering grades six to 12 can register for Teen Reads Club.

The library will have a table at the Lower Macungie Pool summer kickoff pool party 1 to 3 p.m. June 24.

The library will present the eight week Great Decisions program by the Foreign Policy Association 6 p.m. Wednesdays starting June 20. Program booklets are available at the library. Each session includes a 30-minute video followed by a discussion. The topics include the Waning of Pax Americana; Russia’s Foreign Policy; China and America; Media and Foreign Policy; Turkey: A Partner in Crisis; U.S. Global Engagement and the Military; South Africa’s Fragile Democracy and Global Health: Progress & Challenges.

Readers report sessions will be held June 22, June 28, July 3, July 24 and Aug. 14. Children are welcome to stop by and talk with the library staff about their summer. There will also be a special activity.

The next Friends of the Lower Macungie Library meeting is 10 a.m. Sept. 15 in the library. New members are welcome. The Friends wish to thank everyone who donated items for the spring book sale.

Due to the library construction, donations will not be accepted for the fall book sale until Aug. 1. Friends members will begin sorting donations Thursday mornings in August.
