PSPCA

The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Central PA Center at Danville, 1467 Bloom Road, Danville, will celebrate its history of rescuing horses by hosting Help A Horse Day, a day filled with barnyard fun and education for the whole family 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. June 30.

The PSPCA will invite community members of all ages to participate in horse-themed activities to learn about the needs of horses and meet those looking for forever families.

Among the activities on the agenda: equine demonstrations, presentations from the local veterinary community, meet adoptable horses (dogs and cats too) and more.

In addition, a kids’ corner will be set up all day where children can have their face painted, complete activity books, and enjoy horse-themed games.

Help A Horse Day will also act as an introduction to the PSPCA Central PA Center at Danville’s new Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic.

Attendees can tour the facility, which will provide low-cost services to owned animals throughout Montour county and the surrounding areas, something that has been long been missing in the area.

While the PSPCA is most associated with its work rescuing cats and dogs, the organization was founded in 1867 to protect horses.

The advocacy has continued throughout the organization’s 150 year history, and currently the PSPCA’s Danville Center is home to a dozen horses, all whom are available for adoption.

The ASPCA’s nationwide Help a Horse Day competition is for equine rescues and sanctuaries to raise awareness about the lifesaving work they do year-round to care for at-risk horses in their community who have often been abused or neglected.

Horses have been central to the ASPCA’s work since its founding 150 years ago, when Henry Bergh stopped a cart driver from beating his horse, resulting in the first successful arrest for the mistreatment of a horse on April 26, 1866.

Since 1867, the Pennsylvania SPCA, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization headquartered at 350 East Erie Avenue, Philadelphia, has been dedicated to preventing animal cruelty and rescuing animals from abuse and neglect.

The Pennsylvania SPCA’s lifesaving programs for animals include a low-cost veterinary clinic, low-cost spay and neuter services, pet adoption facilities, and the Pennsylvania SPCA Humane Law Enforcement Department.
