4-H Livestock Club performs community service project

More than a dozen members, leaders and parents of the Lehigh County 4-H Livestock Club pitched in with the spring highway cleanup program with the members of Seipstown Grange 1657.

This year, marked the 4-H Club’s eighth year of participation in this annual event and for the grange, its 29th year of participation.

They first took part in Keep America Beautiful and then PennDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway program.

Cleaning litter from 11 miles of highway, 8 miles of which are Route 100 between Fogelsville and Pleasant Corners, and 3 miles of Claussville Road, between Route 100 and Seipstown, is a massive task.

After everyone completed their designated areas the result was nearly 60 overflowing large trash bags, buckets, lumber, car debris from accidents and rubber treads from tires.

Jodi Schiffert coordinated the 4-H members and leaders, working with Seipstown Grange Adopt-A-Highway Coordinator Ann Wertman.

Volunteering many additional hours along with Wertman were Grange members Ron and Lyla Derr and Glenn Reeder as well as cleanup enthusiasts Grant and Jill Mertz of Mertz Signs, Germansville.

Participants are always pleased with the picturesque roadway which blooms forth after their efforts and only hope travelers will appreciate the beauty of the area and help in refraining from a careless toss of debris onto the highway and shoulders.

Wertman noted additional volunteers are desperately needed to continue this worthy Seipstown Grange service program both in spring and fall.

Anyone who would like to be part of this beautification need only volunteer an hour or two and can do so by contacting Ann at 610-298-3254 or annawertman@verizon.net.
