WPI
Rhaine Sziy, of Catasauqua, received a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s 150th commencement May 12. Over 1,000 bachelor’s degrees were awarded.
Founded in 1865 in Worcester, Mass., WPI is one of the nation’s first engineering and technology universities. Its 14 academic departments offer more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in science, engineering, technology, business, the social sciences and the humanities and arts, leading to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.

Bucknell University has released the dean’s list for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2017-18 academic year. A student must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean’s list recognition.

DeSales University, in Center Valley, is a private, coeducational, four-year liberal arts university affiliated with the Roman Catholic church. The university was founded by the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales in 1965 and is located on a 480-acre suburban campus. A total enrollment of nearly 3,000 includes undergraduate day and evening students and graduate students. DeSales has approximately 100 full-time faculty members and offers more than 35 bachelor’s degrees and nine graduate programs in a wide range of disciplines.
Mount St. Mary’s University
Emma Gehringer, of Northampton, earned dean’s list honors for the spring 2018 semester at Mount St. Mary’s University.
Mount St. Mary’s University is a private, liberal arts, Catholic university in the Catoctin Mountains near historic Emmitsburg, Md., with a satellite campus in Frederick, Maryland’s second largest city. The university offers more than 40 majors, minors, concentrations and special programs for traditional undergraduate students and 20 adult undergraduate and graduate level programs.
LCCC
Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) student Aldaine Alphonse, of Whitehall, was honored recently by the Allentown West Rotary Club at a scholarship breakfast held at LCCC’s main campus. Alphonse received $1,000.
The scholarship selection was based on the student’s record of service and leadership, as well as academic performance. The scholarship breakfast, which was directed by Rotarian Dr. Barbara Kistler, professor emeritus at LCCC, was attended by LCCC’s Dr. Thomas Meyer, vice president for academic services and student development, who opened with the welcome; Virginia Mihalik, transfer counselor; and Gene Eden, director of student affairs.
Alphonse, who came to the U.S. in 2016 from Haiti, pursued an associate degree in business from LCCC with a 3.6 GPA and will be attending Bucknell University in the fall majoring in business. She found academic life very challenging at first, particularly overcoming language barriers, but overcame many challenges by using resources available to her, including the college’s tutoring center, and by developing a strict study schedule. In addition to memberships in LCCC’s Student Government Association, Business Club, Psychology Club and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, where Alphonse served as treasurer, she helped develop a payment plan for low-income students wanting to be part of PTK. Alphonse is a home fire volunteer with the American Red Cross, where she not only installs fire alarms, but also teaches fire safety procedures.
Paul Smith’s College
Brad FeKula, of Danielsville, graduated from Paul Smith’s College in May. FeKula earned a degree in biology from Paul Smith’s, which is located in the Adirondack Park in upstate New York.
Paul Smith’s College is the only four-year institution of higher education in the Adirondacks. The college’s programs, in fields including hospitality, culinary arts, forestry, natural resources, entrepreneurship and the sciences, draw on industries and resources available in the area’s backyard while preparing students for successful careers anywhere.
Central Penn College
Austin Appel, of Whitehall, graduated from Central Penn College and participated in the college’s 136th commencement ceremony May 11 at the forum in Harrisburg. Appel received a Bachelor of Science degree in information technology.

Moravian College held commencement exercises May 12 on John Makuvek Field on the Main Street campus. The ceremony concluded the 276th academic year at Moravian. Moravian College President Bryon L. Foyinsi Adegbonmire, of Whitehall, a student at Hofstra University majoring in English, was inducted into Phi Sigma Tau, the international honor society in philosophy, this spring. Hofstra’s department of philosophy inducted a total of 19 students into Phi Sigma Tau. The ceremony was followed by the annual philosophy student conference, in which exciting presentations by philosophy students at all levels of study were presented.
