At the May 30 meeting, members of Alburtis Borough Council made a decision about mailboxes along Franklin Street.

Council President Ron DeIaco received an email from Allen Oswald, a borough resident, saying he is against making permanent mailboxes along Franklin Street instead of regular boxes because when crews from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation plow snow they hit mailboxes. DeIaco agreed with Oswald.

Following a discussion, council asked Borough Manager Sharon Trexler to send a letter to residents to avoid buckets and fix any mailboxes in disrepair. The borough will check with the post office to see if mail will be delivered in the future.

A motion was passed to allow Kathleen Raines, chair of the parks and recreation committee, to have $750 to paint the basketball court after it is paved.

Action has been taken on the bird sanctuary. Quitclaim deeds have been executed and when the claims are filed, the sanctuary will belong to the Borough of Alburtis.

In other meeting news, Borough Engineer Jeff Ott delivered a presentation to identify problems and find solutions for the municipal storm sewer system.

At the end of July, the borough will apply for another permit and will be responsible to remove 10 percent of the pollutants entering streams from the borough’s stormwater system. The borough has an option to do stream bank restoration. The preferred option was to clean up the vegetative channel behind Maple Court. The cost of doing this is estimated to be $20,000 to $40,000.

Action by council was needed to repair sewer issues on Walnut Street. A motion was passed to request bids for sewer repairs.

A representative of the Macungie Ambulance Corps, Inc. reported the corps responded to 299 calls for service in April. Two of the calls were responded to by mutual aid providers because Macungie personnel were on other calls.

Council passed a motion approving a request from the Borough of Macungie to have the Alburtis Fire Department Station #1 Special Fire Police assist the Macungie Police Department during several summer events in June and August.

A motion was passed approving a request from Upper Macungie Township to use Alburtis Fire Police in July for several summer events.

Because maintenance crews cannot do the concrete work needed at Lockridge Historical Church they will be looking for someone to do the work.

A letter was received from J.P. Mascaro & Sons announcing the grand opening of the Francesco A. Mascaro Memorial Baseball Fields and Community Park, 2759 Woodland Ave., Lower Providence Township.

“Over $2 million was put into the modern facility which includes a state-of-the-art, lighted regulation Little League Baseball Stadium with individual seating for over 250 spectators and additional viewing areas throughout. It is expected to attract regional Little League tournaments. The complex also contains two additional full-size Little League Fields that allow for multiple games to be played at the same time, a fully equipped pavilion, a concession stand, a press box, batting cages, a playground geared towards children 2-12 and a one mile paved walking path,” according to the J.P.Mascaro & Sons website.

Motions were passed to approve the meeting minutes of May 9, approve the financial report from Chris A. DeFrain, fiscal consultant and approve the bills of May 30 for payment.

An executive session regarding a personnel issue followed the meeting. No action was taken.
