With four wins in their first five games, Catasauqua’s entry in the Lehigh Valley Connie Mack (LVCM) have given themselves both momentum and position for the coming week.

The 4-1 Roughies had their biggest week and test ahead when they began a four-game week Monday against Bethlehem Catholic followed by Hellertown Wednesday, Emmaus Friday and Stroudsburg Saturday.

They began the week coming off two impressive wins, a 9-3 rout of Silver Creek and a 3-2 win over the Balliet Vikes.

It has been a perfect balance that has kept the Roughies near the middle of the pack in the standings in the LVCM.

“We brought back 10 guys from last year and they all really jelled last year,” said head coach Jim Kober. “They were ready for this year and it shows.

“We have had a good balance of pitching and offense.”

After their first five games, the Roughies are hitting .289 as a team, paced by regulars Ty Reitz (.455), Adam Reinhart (.438), Jason Schneck (.429), and Cole Schiffer (.313) Andrew Torres (.267) lead the team with eight RBIs.

Torres also has paced the pitching staff with a 2-0 record and a 1.82 ERA with a team-high 13 strikeouts in the role of a closer for the team. Jacob Drummer (2-1, 1.75, 9 strikeouts) and Brandon Jenny (1-0, 1.90) also have had solid springs. The Roughies have a 2.18 ERA as a team.

“Andrew (Torres) comes into games in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings and he’s accurate,” said Kober. “He started about halfway through the season on varsity and threw a complete game against Bangor.

“He has a nasty changeup and is a smart pitcher. Drummer also had a good varsity season and he has been strong as well. Brandon Jenny is a tall, lanky lefthander, and you don’t see too many of them around Catty. He’s a sponge around the coaches and we’re excited about what he can do.”

With the schedule becoming more intense this week, Kober knows there will be plenty of tests ahead.

“We have a big schedule now,” he said. “It seems like we will be playing every other day. It a test for a manager to handle the pitching with the pitch counts. We all have to pay attention.

“We feel we are in a good spot because these kids are excited about the season.”
