Cetronia Fire Department was the overnight host ON May 9 for a volunteer firefighter from Sandown, N.H.

However, unlike most visiting firefighters, Jerry Lachance didn’t arrive by car, fire truck or any motorized apparatus.

He instead arrived on his bicycle in the midst of a 2,800 mile ride from Miami, Fla., to Canada.

Lachance, a Vietnam veteran, is raising funds for Project Hero, a California-based nonprofit dedicated to raising money to support veterans and first responders who suffer from PTSD.

According to the website, Project Hero has helped more than 10,000 veterans and first responders recover from both physical as well as emotional trauma.

Even at 70 years old, Lachance pedals at least 50 miles per day, and as much as 100, if necessary.

He has planned his map to coincide with fire departments having living quarters, whether career or volunteer, such as Cetronia.

Lachance is still active at his hometown volunteer department and responds whether at 2 a.m. or daylight.

After leaving Cetronia May 10, Lachance was headed north with a plan to cover 85 miles, including a trip over the Blue Mountain and into Stroudsburg, then heading further on.
