The proud tradition of saluting Old Glory and this nation’s military on Flag Day by the historic 111-year-old Allentown Flag Day Association continues with a patriotic concert by the Great Allentown Band 7 p.m. June 14 in Allentown’s West Park, 16th and Turner streets.

Rain site is the William Allen High School auditorium.

Bugler Leena Harris will call for the presentation of the colors by the William Allen High School Navy JROTC.

Old Glory will be waving proudly to the selections of the Allentown Band, under the direction of Conductor Ron Demkee with John Philip Sousa’s ”Stars and Stripes Forever,” a tribute to all veterans during the “Armed Forces Salute,” and celebrated soprano soloist Evelyn Stewart leading the “Star Spangled Banner” and enhancing the traditional favorites of “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and “God Bless America,” among other patriotic tunes.

The evening’s address will be by Thomas L. Applebach, director of the Lehigh County Office of Veterans Affairs since 2014, who also formed and continues to chair the Lehigh Valley Homeless Veteran Task Force.

In June 2017, the task force received federal declaration stating it had effectively ended veteran homelessness in the Lehigh Valley.

Applebach’s military career spans 21 years and includes deployment to Iraq from 2004-05.

The three winners of the Flag Day Association’s annual essay contest, held in all Allentown middle schools on the role of Old Glory in their lives, will present their essays.

The concert is free. A free will offering will be taken to continue the programs of the Allentown Flag Day Association, the oldest incorporated Flag Day Association in the United States, founded in 1907 by Allentown resident Joe Hart.
