Students attend artists’ reception

Maria Pulli, principal at Northwestern Elementary, headed the agenda for the Northwestern Lehigh School Board at its May 16 meeting.

She introduced Tracy Smoyer, elementary art instructor, who had brought 26 of her kindergarten to fifth grade art students to the meeting.

She said there had been 550 works of art put up in the school for the annual art show.

Students told about their work on a video. The kindergartners, Daniel Clare and Cameron Kahl, had made aquariums.

They discussed what materials were used and were asked if they would prefer to have animals other than just fish in their pictures.`

First graders made colorful robots. Students were Perry Kemmerer, Cameron Petrucelli, Hailey Rex, and Reese Van Norman.

Second graders made monsters. When asked what they liked about their monsters, the frequent answer was the teeth and eyes.

Second graders were Chase Sukanick, Ella Kerschner, Seth Kerschner, McKenzie Harding, Kaitlyn Rau, Emily Hinkle, Elijah McCown, Nora Peterson, Jake Werley, Rosalia Nestor, Madaline Phillips and McKenna Church.

Ice cream cones with six colorful dips of ice cream on variously primary color cones were made by third graders who were Gavin Reed and Madilyn Turner.

Fourth grade used rotational symmetry by tracing a pattern and then cutting it out and putting it on the picture. Students were Isaiah Lynch and Serenity Olmo.

Victoria Heckman, Jack Mauro, Jacob Fagan and Olivia Wisser displayed their talent with pixel art. After drawing shapes they added color from an array of shapes and colors to use.

Superintendent Mary Anne Wright said the pictures would remain in the board room until fall. They brighten the room she said. Each student received a certificate.

Board President Bill Dellicker said it was always nice when the children were there for opening exercises and recited the Pledge of Allegiance with the adults.

Resigning teachers were recognized. Operations Director Arthur Oakes told about Kevin Uetz who worked during the summer. He was a carpenter who understood the community. Oakes said Uetz helped him when he first came on board.

Vivian Weidner was with the district for 33 years first as a kindergarten teacher and then with second grade. Jill Berlet, Weisenberg principal, said she had insight and compassion for the job. working tirelessly to help the students.

Aileen Yadush, high school principal, said Jan Sutermeister, taught German and language arts for 13 years and worked to ensure student success. She worked with the school community of both support staff and students.

Pulli said Anne Towne helped each student do their best work outside the box. She was professional and cared for others.

Dellicker thanked them and said they touched a lot of lives.
