Upper Macungie Township police are investigating a burglary which occurred between 4-4:30 p.m. May 21 in the 1800 block of Becker Street.
Police say the male homeowner reported he was working outside his home when he was approached by a Hispanic male with short dark hair, standing approximately 6 feet 3 inches tall, who appeared to be in his late 20s to early 30s.
The well-dressed man, who had a name tag around his neck, told the homeowner his company had been hired by the township to cut down trees in the area.
Police say the two men then walked to the rear of the property together.
While they were there, the suspect was on a radio with his “boss.”
The man then left in a small light color SUV, possibly a Toyota RAV 4.
Several hours later, the homeowner discovered his home had been burglarized.
Police say this type of scam is a distraction burglary. Typically worked in teams, one suspect distracts the homeowner, while another commits the burglary.
The team uses a communication device to alert the other suspect when the victim is distracted so the second subject can enter the home without being noticed.
Police ask residents to contact 911 immediately if these suspects are observed in their area.
Anyone with information about this incident, is asked to contact Crime and Community Services Division Commander Lt. Peter Nickischer at 484-661-5911 or email pnickischer@uppermac-pd.org.
