Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts brought its production of “Ballet Sur Glace - Swan Lake” to the ice. The figure skating department of the school skated the scenes at Steel Ice Center in Bethlehem.
Thom Mullins is the department and production director.
“Producing a ballet on ice is a particular challenge since skaters are accustomed to performing a routine, then leaving the ice for a costume change, returning many songs later,” Mullins said. “With a ballet, the skaters are on the ice for six or seven songs, before leaving the ice. So the performance takes more focus and stamina”.
For this adaption on ice of ‘Swan Lake,’ Jiselle Bracaro portrayed the Swan, Kobe Wisner, Prince Siegfried; and Andrew Hampl, the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart, who casts spells on young maidens, turning them into swans.
The prince first encounters the beautiful swans at a lake made from their tears, falls in love and tries to rescue the swan from captivity.
Charter Arts opened in 2003. The school is audition-based and is tuition free as a public charter that provides a comprehensive curriculum for students in grades 9 - 12 who have a passion for the arts. The student body comes from over 45 school districts. Students major in one of seven artistic areas including dance, theater, vocal music, instrumental music, literary arts, figure skating or visual arts. Students spend half their day in artistic classes and half of their day in core academic classes. You can learn more at charterarts.org
