The Salisbury Township Recreation Advisory Committee met May 21 to discuss ongoing and upcoming activities.

Recreation Director Genny Baillie reported the dates of the summer playground program will be June 18 through July 27. Baillie waited to set the dates until she was certain when the last day of school would be.

Township children who are entering first grade through age 12 are eligible to participate. Program hours are 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evenings.

The playground program includes a number of outdoor activities including arts and crafts, a soccer clinic, a basketball clinic, movie nights and regular visits to the parks from the Allentown Public Library book van for students to check out books.

Registration forms are available on the township website www.salisburytownshippa.org.

Baillie said the hiring of playground staff has begun; the letters have been sent to staff.

Orientation for staff will be June 14.

This will be the first time the playground program will not be held at Lindberg Park due to construction.

All students are encouraged to attend the playground program at Laubach Park, Devonshire Park and Green Acres Park. Baillie has added additional staff to both Devonshire Park and Green Acres Park, expecting additional children who would normally attend the program at Lindberg Park.

The park day, typically held at Lindberg Park, will be held July 25 with a rain date of July 26. Baillie said the location is yet to be determined.

Speaking about the Lindberg Park construction, Baillie said the park will remain open in certain areas for residents. The goal is to have the ball fields, tennis and basketball courts open.

In other business, Salisbury Township Recreation Advisory Committee Secretary Kimberly Ringhoffer is working with Det. Christopher Casey on the National Night Out/Community Day scheduled for Aug. 7. The Salisbury Township Board of Commissioners voted in February to combine the two events.

Donations are being sought for the event.

In the parks report, committee member Francis J. McCullough reported large crowds of people on the basketball courts at Green Acres. He also noted there are activities at Green Acres Park which are not allowed, including playing football and riding bikes. The township manager will be informed.

McCullough also talked about the flooding at Lindberg Park. Baillie said she will talk with Director of Public Works John Andreas.

In old business, Baillie said the master plan for Lindberg Park is moving forward. Commissioners have approved the general contractor bid and the plumbing.

The next meeting is scheduled 7:30 p.m. July 16 in the township municipal building. Any changes to the meeting dates will be noted on the township website.
