The Salisbury Township School District board of directors met May 9 at Salisbury High School for its monthly meeting with several recognitions on the agenda.

SHS Assistant Principal Brian Muschlitz presented awards to three individuals who created posters “encouraging students to notify faculty and staff when they notice concerning or suspicious behavior, both in and outside of school,” according to the district website. This year’s theme was “Notice something? Tell someone. We’re here to help.”

The contest is part of the Student Assistance Program in place throughout the district and is designed to encourage a safe, caring and supportive school district community.

Winners of the contest were first place: Kaitlyn Macauley, second place Gwyn DeFazio and third place Olivia Ringholm.

The winners received Lehigh Valley Mall gift cards and the first place winning design will be professionally printed and distributed for display in all Salisbury Township School District facilities.

Student representatives from all four schools provided updates on activities to board members and administrators.

In other business, the board approved the 2018-2019 proposed final budget in the amount of $37,498,170. The proposed final budget includes a tax increase to residents of 2.4 percent or an increase of $91 on an average home valued at $206,000. Secretary of the Board Robert Bruchak reminded residents and the board this is still a proposed final budget and the administration is still looking for ways to save money and reduce the increase in taxes.

Three retirements were approved: Salisbury Middle School math teacher Cynthia Mugavero, effective June 12; Assistant to the Director of Facilities Wayne Covely, effective Sept. 2 and Jessyca Ligh, a part-time one-to-one instructional assistant at SHS effective May 18.

In other personnel news, Kaitlyn Paglione resigned as a part-time one-to-one instructional assistant at Harry S Truman Elementary School effective June. 12.

Ashley Cote was approved as a part-time nurse assistant at Salisbury High School effective April 30.

Parent Nadine Smith spoke to the board during citizens comments to commend Salisbury Middle School teacher Michele DeOliveira during teacher appreciation week.

Smith said DeOliveira has been “unbelievable” in her mentoring of students. She also commended teacher Michael Posch and substitute teacher Jordon Stenroos.
