Come out June 14 and cheer the patriotism of our youngsters during the annual Flag Day program as the students read their winning essays and poetry.

The program, organized by the Woman’s Club of Emmaus, will be held 6 p.m. in the Arts Pavilion at Emmaus Community Park. The focus of the students’ poems and essays is “What the American Flag means to me.” The program will include the Emmaus Chorale under the direction of Laura Rabenold, Emmaus veterans, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Randy Schueck Jr., a Vietnam-era U.S. Marine Corps veteran, will be the featured speaker. The Rev. David K. Schlonecker of the Bethel Bible Fellowship Church will give the invocation and benediction. Nathan Brown, Lehigh County commissioner, will preside. Emmaus Mayor Lee Ann Gilbert will present proclamations to the winners.

The Emmaus Public Library will hold a kickoff party for the Summer Reading Club 2018, “Libraries Rock!” 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 16. The event features carnival games, food trucks, live music and summer reading club registration held on the lawn of the library, 11 E. Main St. Entrance to the event is free. Food and merchandise will be available for purchase on site as well as at neighboring businesses. The kickoff party also serves as a fundraiser in support of the expansion of the children’s wing.

Bring out your no longer used treasures to sell during the Emmaus community yard sale 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 2. No permit is required. The rain date is June 3. Happy shopping!

The historical society will hold its annual member picnic 5:30 p.m. June 20 in the Moser Pavilion at Emmaus Community Park. If planning to attend, leave a message at the office at 610-966-6591 with the number of persons attending and whether you will bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert. Non-members are welcome by paying 2018 membership dues.

The society welcomes donations of Emmaus-related items. Whether it came from Emmaus or was used by an Emmaus resident, the museum collections committee appreciates all donations. Donations are accepted during museum hours or by calling the office at 610-966-6591.

The Kiwanis Club of Emmaus will hold its 45th annual pancake and sausage festival, 8 a.m. to noon June 3 at Emaus Fire Co. #1, Sixth and Broad streets. The event features face painting, a basket raffle, celebrities and more. There is a cost for tickets for adults; children under age 10 eat free. All proceeds benefit local Emmaus Kiwanis-sponsored service projects.

The Emmaus Garden Club will meet noon June 5 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3002 N. Second St. The program is “Traditional and Contemporary Floral Designs” with Lynnette Barlip of Bob’s Flower Shop in Northampton. Barlip is a fourth generation florist and an FTD master floral designer and wedding consultant. She is committed to sharing the beauty of flowers. The designs she creates will be raffled at the end of the meeting.

Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. June 18 in council chambers, 28 S. Fourth St. The budget and finance committee meets 6:45 to 7 p.m. prior to the council meeting.

Emmaus has held summer concerts in the park for 39 years. The free concerts are held in the community arts pavilion, 1401 Shimersville Road, 6 p.m. unless otherwise noted. The concerts in June are June 3: Inch and the Echoes (5 p.m.); June 10: James Supra Band with Sarah Ayers; no concert on Father’s Day (June 17); June 24: entertainer Tommy Zito (5 p.m.).

Free Zumba is offered 9 a.m. every Saturday in the Arts Pavilion. Donations for instructors are welcome.

Bring your blankets and chairs to enjoy a movie under the stars at community park 8 p.m. June 29. The feature will be “Coco.” For information, visit www.EmmausENT.com.

The community park pool will be open noon to 8 p.m. June 3 and 4 and then be closed until June 10, when it will open daily for the regular season noon to 8 p.m. Swim lessons will be offered in July. Citizen’s Fire Co. #2 will hold a community carnival, 1017 Pennsylvania Ave., 6 to 10 p.m. June 6 to 10.

The Emmaus Senior Citizens’ group meets 1 p.m. Fridays at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Congregational Church, Ridge and Fifth streets. The programs during June are June 1: Jack Saunders, musician; June 8, to be announced and June 15 is a picnic noon at the church. The group does not meet in July or August. The month of June at the Emmaus Public Library will be an exciting place to be. For the youngsters, 1 p.m. June 2, Ellen Wilson will teach ways to encourage butterflies in their neighborhood. On June 19, teens (13 to 17) will create upcycled musical instruments using hot glue guns 3 p.m. Miss Jolie will lead a program on the wilderness 11 a.m. June 20 and Daria will lead a family-friendly drum making event 2 p.m. June 20.

The library is also offering block parties, summer story time, teen read, teen writing club, Teen Anime Club, board games and Books ‘n Barks. Literary Lunch Jr. and Literary Lunch will also be held. The adult daytime book group meets 2 p.m. June 5. The craft, guitar pick necklaces, will be made by adults and families 7 p.m. June 11. Erica McHugh will lead a yoga session set to rock music 7 p.m. June 18. Tahya will lead a FitRhythm class designed for adults and teens that combines hand-held percussion with natural body movements 6:30 p.m. June 25. No experience is necessary. You may notice youngsters visiting the borough’s historical sites June 11, 12 and 13. The students are taking part in the Heritage Alliance Education project coordinated with the schools as a way to bring history alive to the students and help them appreciate the history in their community. The students will visit four Emmaus historical sites during the program.
