Board change at Weisenberg meeting

Weisenberg Township has a new face on the board of supervisors - Richard Bleiler.

Bleiler was the chairperson of the planning commission and served on the commission for 40 years.

During the board’s May 14 meeting, an important item of discussion was approving the retirement of Supervisor Tom Wehr.

Vice Chairman Anthony Werley and Chairwoman Linda Gorgas discussed Wehr’s retirement request.

After 25 years of service to the residents of Weisenberg on both the board of supervisors and the planning commission, time and circumstance have led Wehr to step down from the board.

Werley moved to approve Wehr’s request and Gorgas seconded the motion. Wehr’s retirement became effective immediately. Gorgas then read Wehr’s resignation letter.

The letter explained how involved Wehr was in the community.

His involvement included: Weisenberg Township planning commission, Weisenberg and Lowhill Historical Society, Northwestern Recreation Commission, Weisenberg Volunteer Fire Department, Multi Municipal Comprehensive plan for the Northern region of Lehigh County, development of Weisenberg park and fields.

The board also needed to fill Wehr’s spot on the planning commission.

Werley made a motion to appoint Jeff Broadhurst the position, which Gorgas seconded.

The item of discussion under new business was an agricultural security area proposal for Reinert, Heintzelman and Cappuccino farms.

Areas proposed to be included were: 5116 Ross Valley road (43.71 acres), 5117 Ross Valley road (7.22 acres), 4897 Five Points road (7 acres) and 4872 Five Points road (4.73 acres).

Bleiler made a motion to pass the agricultural security area proposal and Werley seconded it.

Next, Brian Carl read the state police 2017 incident report.

There were 1,130 total incidents, four burglaries, six criminal mischiefs, 29 thefts, 127 crashes of which 82 were nonreportable, 13 DUI arrests, 99 alarms, and 504 citations issued.

Following the police report, the board discussed a proposed subdivision for Lynn Township at 8703 Muse/Hummingbird. The proposal was made by Paul Kuhn.

Carl suggested Weisenberg defer from dealing with the proposed subdivision as there would not be any change in Weisenberg, and the subdivision was entirely in Lynn.

Werley motioned for deferral and Bleiler seconded the motion.

Carl then reported the Weisenberg Volunteer Fire Department has had 89 calls for the year. The department also had to issue some burn bans due to recent dry whether, but they do not see having to do that in the summer unless there are some droughts.

Roadmaster Anthony Werley reported the road crew has done a great deal of paving recently.

However, they will start mowing grass along the side of the roads in the next week or so.

Under administrator comments, Carl said he baseball field will need some treatment, which is about four acres, and the four multipurpose fields which are 13 acres.

The athletic fields will need start up fertilizer, but will not need weed control this year.

They may need to put grub control down later in the year as well as a fall fertilizer.

Carl said the cost could be up to $6,375 for the remainder of 2018.

Werley made the motion to approve $6,375 for the athletic fields and Bleiler seconded it.
