Stagemakers to perform ‘Once Upon a Mattress’

Stagemakers at the J will perform “Once Upon a Mattress” 7 p.m. May 10 and 13; and at 2 p.m. May 13 at the Jewish Community Center, Allentown.

The play is about King Sextimus, who due to a curse, is unable to speak. And, his unappealing wife, Queen Aggravain, has taken control of the kingdom.

She is determined to keep their son, Prince Dauntless, from ever getting married. The only way a princess can ever become the prince’s betrothed is by passing a rigorous sensitivity test designed by the queen.

And no one in the kingdom may get married until Prince Dauntless weds.

The kingdom’s head knight, Sir Harry, is very disappointed by this because he is deeply in love with his girlfriend, Lady Larken, eventually, Sir Harry is able to find an amazing princess, Winnifred the Woebegone.

Winnifred instantly catches the attention of Prince Dauntless and will hopefully be able to pass the queen’s test.

“The show is a delightful comedy appropriate for all ages,” director Nicholas Conti said. “The role of Princess Winnifred was originated on Broadway by comedian Carol Burnett.

“The show contains Burnett’s brand of humor which is why the show is hilarious.

“The kids in the show have put a lot of effort into making it entertaining, funny, and impressive.

“I am proud to be working with them. They have so much talent and it should be shared with as many people as possible.”

Tickets may be purchased by calling the JCC at 610-435-3571. They also will be available at the door.
