District news: Open house set for tonight at Gockley Elementary School
Gockley Elementary School’s open house is set for 6-8 p.m. tonight, May 10.
From 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. May 17, Zephyr Elementary School will have its open house. Selected students are conducting experiments and collecting data for Zephyr’s first science fair. These young scientists will showcase their scientific knowledge during the event.

Schools will be closed tomorrow, May 11. This will be a professional development day for teachers.

Camp Whitehall 2018 sign-ups begin tomorrow, May 11. The summer day camp is open to children residing in the Whitehall-Coplay School District who have completed kindergarten (minimum age 5) through eighth grade (maximum age 15).

PTO spring book fairs are in the works. Zephyr Elementary’s event will be May 14-18.
Steckel Elementary School will hold its book fair May 21-25.
Students will be bringing home a flier with more details and a preview of some of the great selections that will be available.

Second-grade orientation is scheduled for 5:30-6:30 p.m. May 14. Current first-grade students and parents are invited to attend the orientation for the 2018-19 school year at Steckel Elementary. The meeting will be held in the cafeteria.

On May 15, Whitehall-Coplay Middle School will present its Night of Music in the high school auditorium. The concert begins 7 p.m.

The Whitehall High School spring concert date has been changed from May 24 to May 17. It will begin 7 p.m. and is held in the auditorium.
There is no charge for the event.

First grade’s field day will be held 9-11 a.m. May 31. The rain date is June 1. Students will participate in many fun activities.
Remember to dress your child appropriately for the weather. Also, be sure to wear sneakers, bring a water bottle and wear sunscreen.

Zephyr Elementary’s pet drive for Peaceable Kingdom animal shelter is underway. Items are being collected in all homerooms.
Two fifth-grade Girl Scouts have been working very hard to organize the drive.
Fliers have been sent home with a list of items the shelter is in need of.

Warm weather guidelines for your child’s attire during the school day: Please do not wear flip-flops. This footwear can cause injury on the playground and around schools. Students are encouraged to wear sneakers or sandals that have a strap in the back to prevent injury.
Also, shirts must cover students’ shoulders, and shorts may not be shorter than arm length.
The district appreciates parents’ help with this matter.

Volunteers are needed for upcoming children’s days at the elementary schools. The PTO is looking for parent/grandparent/guardian volunteers. You must have clearances to help.
